This morning I decided to do away with the XTG as I never really felt like it accomplished much. I could hear cutting but could see no results. So 1 pass WTG and 1 ATG and touch up in my usual trouble spots and BBS in 1 less pass. I have been wet shaving for over 6 years and I am still learning. Can't wait to try it again tomorrow.

I have done the same. I do WTG and ATG and then do some touchup.

I get skin irritation if I go against the grain. So I just do WTG and XTG with a final touchup, and I'm BBS nearly every time.

I believe the XTG helps with people learning. There are some areas I can now go directly to ATG, but others that are tricky for me I need 1 or 2 XTG passes

Above the jaw I can do that; WTG then ATG.

Jawline & below I can't. There it's WTG, XTG, then hybrid ATG/XTG.

Great idea! I usually do XTG followed by ATG in my more challenging areas. Otherwise, it's just as you say.

+1 Since it takes awhile to get the face mapping sorted out, all the "extra" passes gets everything.

I do much the same. Crazy growth beneath the jawline. I call it 2 1/3 passes. If I want a BBS I see no way that I can further reduce the passes.

I couldn't do just two passes with my EJ DE89, but I can with my open comb. I believe it has something to do with not getting close enough on my first pass so the hair was doing more pushing back when I went ATG.

It's possible it's a coincidence and the real reason I can do it now is the final bit of experience I needed.

For a while I did two XTG passes, one in each direction, then ATG. (Or just XTGx2 for a neat, easy work shave.)

On my neck, it's best to do 2 xtg passes before ATG, but my cheeks are BBS in 2 passes and maybe a little touch-up.

I've gotten to the point now where all I really need is two WTG passes. If I want to get it really close I will throw an XTG pass in there but never ATG.

Every once and a while I just do two passes (WTG and ATG). However, I find that the shave doesn't "last" as long as if I do three passes. Also, I timed it once and it only adds about 30-45 seconds to my morning so I prefer to do all three passes(irritation concerns aside).

+2. Never did XTG IIRC, but it's been so long. Don't think I did it with cartridges either.

Tried, but found it really useful when using a straight edge. Start with a WTG, go to a XTG and then a ATG.

For me, it depends on the kind of razor I'm using. With a DE I do just like you: WTG+ATG+touch ups. That's maybe because it's easier for me to shave with a DE, I've been doing that for years.

The straight is a relatively new beast for me and I need two XTGs (opposite directions) before going ATG. The result is that my skin gets more irritated but the shave is closer. And the aftershave kills me Biggrin

I usually go XTG 2X on my cheeks and go a mild version of XTG on some parts of my neck.

I do ATG for my final pass on my jaw line and my chin.

w and x are easy for me comparatively. It's the A that's difficult.

I always do a with the grain and an across the grain. Then I'll do a touch up. If I go against it's only under my chin.
