Gentlemen:
It's snowing here in the province and I don't feel like doing any work, even though there are several articles to work on, as well as the novel. So I thought I might as well review the stash in the shave den and note the changes in the soap and cream lineup.
Not that the task bears any significance compared to the cement mixer spinning in today's world, it beats watching daytime television.
Some of the products have grabbed a permanent spot on the counter, while others have been more like visitors, some gone permanently. So here is the latest lineup, in no particular order:

SOAPS:
Martin de Candre
Joris,
Czech & Speake
Mitchell's Wool Fat
Provence Sante

CREAMS:
Xpec
Castle Forbes lavender
Santa Maria Novella
Acqua di Parma
Trumper Violet

If for various reasons you are yawning your day away, please chime in with your lineup. If not, there's always the pain of daytime television. Thanks.
Your humble uselessness,
Obie

Obie, that is a nice lineup. By seeing Joris on your soap list, I must assume you've dialed it in. I've used mine a few times and was not overly impressed. Any secret?

On the other hand, I have my own MdC in wood bowl coming soon and can't wait. I was lucky enough to have a jar on loan to me for a few months and absolutely love the stuff. Cool

Billy, Joris sang for me from the first try a couple years back. It's a hard soap and likes water. It's a lovely soap, I might add. Martin de Candre, of course, is celestial in every way. I had held off on Czech & Speake for quite sometime, to my regret. It, too, is a luscious soap. I use the Cambridge and Oxford. So, in soaps, those three have tenure.
For creams, I can't get enough of Xpec, Castle Forbes and Santa Maria Novela. Acqua di Parma is a good cream, but I don't think it's worth the hefty price. So once it's finished I will retire the brand.

I love everything about it. The lather is thick and moist, the cushion comfortable, the glide silky, and the fragrance like a bouquet of flowers in bloom. Good stuff.

Others in roatation are:

Cella

Mundus Bay Rum
Mundus Brave
LuvWik Natural
Portland General Store Tabacco
Pre de Provence
De Vergulde Hand, original scent

Great feedback on Joris, Obie! If I had to guess, I'd bet I wasn't giving it enough water. I'll have to revisit it soon.

The place that used to sell it is out. Who else stocks Joris?

Yes, gentlemen, Phil stocks Joris. Also, if you've never tried Czech & Speake, especially the Oxford and Cambridge version, I think you will be pleased. Phil stocks that, as well. Good stuff these.

Since I (STILL) only use shaving creams (my soap order containing 7 soaps got lost during the shipping - this to me was a sure sign that I should stick with creams Tongue )

Top 5? I don't know if I can do that. How about the real standouts? We'll see where it takes me. I'm more into soaps than anything else. I'm judging them on performance with scent being secondary to not even on the radar. Price isn't a factor, ie, the best bang for the buck? Not a consideration.

MdC is a given.
P.160 croap
Klar Seifen, "Sport" is what I have on hand
Provence Sante "verlain"
MWF

There are so many really good soaps and creams in my cabinet that it's hard to pick the 5 best but I think I did.

Creams:
Any RazoRock that I've tried so far is a really good performer
KMF
Speick
Any Proraso

  1. Martin de Candre - Savon À Raser
  2. P.160
  3. Vito's Extra Super
  4. RazoRock La Famiglia Range
  5. Mike's Natural Soaps

MdC is getting used exclusively by me right now; 23 straight shaves with MdC and barely a dent in the glass pot. I just picked up some more P.160 so smelling that recently has got me wanting to use it soon.

Soaps:
MdC
L'Occitane Cade
MWF
Mike's Natural
Razorock Napoleon's Violet

Creams
XXX
Fresco
S. Maria
Speick (original and Active)
Tossup between Nivea and Proroaso Red

The main changes are in the creams. As I get more into creams over soaps, I find some I really don't want to live without.

I started wet shaving full time back in January 2010.

All that time and till now, I've had in excess of 200 shaving soaps and creams passing through my hands (rough approximation, currently I keep around 160-170 of them in stock, rotation is much smaller of course).

I mention this because every time each of us is trying out something new, it adds to his/her experiences. This, in turn, makes a difference when we are asked or called to provide an opinion on a product.

Top 5 soaps:

- Palmolive stick
- Yardley vintage
- AoS
- Dr. Henk's'
- Cella

Top 5 creams:

- Dovo
- Penhaligons
- Omega (lanolin)
- Santa Maria Novella
- Castle Forbes

I have just about got it narrowed down where I don't need to experiment anymore. So, here they are.

Soaps:

Martin de Candre
Mitchell's Wool Fat
Speick Stick
P.160
Boellis Panama 1924

Creams:

Santa Maria Novella - Hate to call this a cream
Speick Cream
Vintage Proraso Red

That's it. This is my soap/cream inventory. Naturally I have more than one of each.
