I'm thinking of trying out some Portuguese shaving creams and would welcome some recommendations from those of you who have used some before.

The list I am looking at is made up of:

Musgo Real
Lavanda
O Melhor
Nally Men's Estoril Sports Line
Top Secret
Via Men
Veleiro

I'm not a great lover of strong Lavender scents or strong woody scents and am also not keen on products which have large amounts of Menthol in them as I find that this tends to irritate my skin.

Any thoughts or recommendations would be most helpful. Smile

Well, start with Musgo Real.Even when menthol is listed as one of its ingredients,I dont feel any menthol at all.Its scent its great and I love its skin care.
O Melhor and Veleiro are nice creams too : they smells pretty equal, like a lighter version of Eternity for men (at least to me).Contains as Musro Real some lanolin and are good with the skin care.
I havent tried Via Men but has almost the same formulation than O Melhor,Veleiro,Lavanda and Top Secret,so its gonna be good to with a more freshes scent, according to the guys who have tried it.
Nally Estorils is a decent cream but its not playin in the same league as the other Portuguese shaving creams from Confianca/Ach Brito.
And if you dont like lavender scent, forget about the Lavanda one, even when its a great one.

I like Lavanda and don't find the lavender scent to be strong -IMHO. The scent and potency of the scent in Lavanda reminds me of Martin de Candre. The Top Secret performs well with decent moisturizing and ease of lather.

No doubt Lavanda would be my choice. Nice and slick with a great Lavender scent. What's not to love?

Musgo Real is one of my favorite creams, ever! Great performer, lathers nice and slick, contains lanolin so it will take care of your skin. The scent is kind of grassy, which sounds weird but I find it very soothing and appealing.

Veleiro is very nice too, also contains lanolin (I think all the Portuguese creams do). More of a cologne type of scent, supposed to remind one of the sea. A really nice performing cream too, provides a slick protective lather.

Lavanda was a big disappointment to me, mostly due to the scent. Lavender is one of my favorite scents, but Lavanda did not remind me of lavender at all, maybe somewhere far, far away. I could not get past the scent to tell you how it performs.

I love Musgo Real cream. The way it lathers, the slickness, and the smell. But I cannot use it. I do not know what it is, but something in it burns my face something awful. I still use their glyce lime oil soap and their after shave splash and balm.

Johnny, could be the lanolin, it is a common allergen.

That is what I thought at first, but I have no problem using MWF and it is loaded with lanolin.

I have the same problem with Musgo cream, Johnny. And I, too, am not convinced that it's the lanolin. Lavanda does the same thing to me.

Me too Johnny. I cannot use Musgo Real cream but have no issues with MWF.

As much as I like the Musgo Real performance, I am still not too sure about the scent.
Let's say an acquired taste.

My suggestion would be Top Secret.
It's a great cream, with - in my humble opinion - a much nicer scent.

Thanks for the recommendations guys.

I settled on Musgo, O Melhor, Top Secret and Lavanda in the end.

I'm having the same problems as a couple of other people with the Musgo - I can detect a clear burning/prickly sensation when using it and my skin went somewhat blotchy.

I'm off to try the O Melhor later and see how that goes. Smile

This thread has me itching to add a tube of Portuguese cream to my soon-to-be-placed order for a new bar of Musgo GLO (one of the few products I consistently use up).

O Melhor vs Top Secret - can anyone give a clue as to scent differences?

Cheers!

Top Secret is very "rosy", it is actually a mix of rose of Bulgaria, woods and musk.
As for O Melhor, it is "cologny", but more like a "modern" scent.

Thanks - this helps. Both sound good to me. I do like rose scented creams, so Top Secret has been ordered!
