Earlier last year,Geo F. Trumper introduced a new shaving soap with a classic fragrance : Eucris. Many people were pretty happy about the "new boy in the hood" and I was one of them,so I decided to order one and test it.

I must admit that I was really please with this soap packaging and presentation in the black wooden bowl (something that Taylor of Old Bond Street have copied recently with the Jeremyn Street shaving soap).

Also its scent, the Eucris scent, was one of the best that I have smelled so far, with the Harris Arlington and the Taylors Jeremyn Street ones.A classic, manly, woody and fruity fresh scent, the one that really awakens my senses when Im going to shave.I think that Trumpers came with a brilliant scent,I must admit.

However, not everything was so great in this soap. Its formulation was really different from the other Geo F. Trumpers soaps and for some people was impossible to make good lather out of this soap.

These are the ingredients of the Geo F. Trumper Eucris shaving soap :

Sodium Palmate, Potassium Stearate, Sodium Cocoate Sodium Stearate, Aqua, Potassium Cocoate, Glycerin, Parfum, Tetrasodium EDTA ,Sodium Chloride, Isopropyl Myristate ,Tetrasodium Etidronate Evernia Fufuracea BHT Coumarin

It doesn't seems to be a "bad" formulation and it contains Sterates (possibly from a vegetable source),and Coconut Oil.

Well,I was capable to make lather of it,but the lather it wasnt as dense or thick as the one I was able to make with other Geo F. Trumpers soaps like the Coconut,Sandalwood,Roses or Violets (they have a different formulation than this one too).

Here is a pic of the densest lather I was able to make from this soap using a badger hair brush :

As you can see,it wasn't that thick or dense, and actually was kind of runny, even when I didn't use to much water...

Skin care wise, wasnt as bad as other soaps but not as good as the other Geo F. Trumper soaps that I have tried (all veggie versions).

This is a soap with one of the greatest fragrances out there but skin care wise is medium/normal if you are capable of making "good" lather with it.

Another interesting post : Geo F. Trumper Eucris shaving cream

Thanks for the review. Disappointing, as I like the scent of the Eucris cologne.

Thanks for the review Teiste.

I had thought about trying this soap but haven't got on with Trumpers soaps and creams in general over the last year, so I'm really glad that I didn't get some now.

Great Review. I think you're spot on but I'll go ahead and add my thoughts

The scent of this soap is very nice and the packaging is most pleasing. The performance, however, leaves a lot to be desired. I will never buy another GFT soap. They should be ashamed of themselves for putting their name on such an inferior product

It's useable, and the scent is good. But it isn't worth anywhere close to what they are asking. You could add a scentless cream for a super lather though. I think that would give you the best scent and lather

Thats one thing I don't find acceptable - if you have to add a cream to make it work, it's not worth the money I paid for it. If it doesn't work on its own merit then I'd rather save the money I'm putting into it with the added cream to buy something that works. Luckily I've had good luck so far where I didn't need to do that.

The soap works for itself (at least mine did) but its not playing on the same league of quality and skin care protection, than other veggie based shaving soaps, that's for sure.
Years ago,the name of certain brands were associate it with quality. These days, you could buy a Truefitt and Hill soap, spent 40 bucks on it,and be completely garbage to shave with...

I bought this soap with high hopes since it was Trumpers brand and the awesome smell of Eucris. I was equally disappointed and sold it after the first test lather, there was no point in having to fight with it each time I wanted to use it when I had other well-performing soaps. I plan on giving the cream a try though, seems to have better reviews. That scent is too good to pass up.

That's a bummer. At least you're getting good enough results that it's not a total loss for you so that's good at least. It's just that with a steeper price anything less than "very good - excellent" feels like a loss. Paying 5 bucks for a puck and it just being "ok" doesn't bother me.

Then you may as well buy the Eucris cream.

It sounds like the soap performs as well as Penhaligon's now. Sad.

Sorry to say that a lot of Trumpers soaps both hard and soft (creams) aren't what they used to be. Personally I think they have 'commercialised' themselves too much and cast aside the traditions that once made them special and different.
I visited their salon in Duke of York Street a couple of weeks ago and the atmosphere/ambience was not how it used to be in the old Jermyn Street salon.

Thanks to Greekguy (Nick) I have been able to test today another Geo F. Trumper Eucris shaving soap. The scent, great, the lather was not bad,but not good at all.

I did load the brush for over 40 seconds and wet back to get my cam....by the time I prepare the camera, the bubbles and fine lather it was on the top of the soap puck disappeared,so it looks like I didnt load the brush from that puck of soap. You also can see how fine is the "lather" on the tips of the Simpson Classic 1...not a good sign...

I did palm lather for over 3 minutes and this is was the final result :

A bubbly lather, which was ok to shave with, but not as good as the other Trumper soaps, like Sandalwood,Violet,Rose and Coconut. Its actually pretty far behind those soaps.

The shave was ok,with some skin dryness after it,and not as good as I have been enjoying it with the Floris soaps.

As I mention, the scent is pretty nice, but If I would have to choose between this one and the new Taylor of Old Bond Street Jeremyn Street shaving soap,I would go for the TOBS with no hesitation at all : better lather and Im more partial to its scent than to the Eucris one.

I really hope that Geo F. Trumper would release better soaps in the future,as the first veggie versions of many of its soaps used to be (never tried the tallow based ones).

Well,I got another Geo F Trumper Eucris shaving soap, like 2 months ago, dont even know why...but,now Im pretty glad I did it!!!
After watching the video on this thread : How to lather a shaving soap : video I realized my mistake...I was treating this shaving soap like the other Geo F Trumper soaps (different formulations) not understanding that this soap is another beast...Anyway,the results, using a Plisson 12 HMW two band, and after loading for 40 seconds with a brush on the dry side, and making lather on the palm of my hand for over a minute, adding drops of water (like 10 or so) :

yes, this lather is the one I like,no bubbly at all, like my old lather with this soap and yes,Geo F Trumper shaving soap, works!End of the story.

I just realized that I was leaving too much water on my brush (like I do with the other Geo F Trumper soaps) and this trick doesnt works with this one.

So the soap truly works, makes lather thick and dense,as well as slick. If you arent willing to load the brush with soap for 40 seconds and be patience building up the lather, this soap is not for you,as well as most triple milled soaps.Think about using creams instead or glycerin based shaving soap.

Im sure that many complaints about the lather from English triple milled shaving soaps, comes from people that they dont even know how to make lather of a triple milled soap, and theres nothing wrong with their puck of soaps, but only a lack of skill.

And yes,I am a pro UK shaving soaps!

Nick,if you are still having the Trumper Eucris you lend me like 3 months ago,try what I have told you,and voila!the lather would be as good as the quality UK shaving soaps.

Thanks for the report! Glad to hear you were able to get a great lather out of it in the end... That is truly a beautiful lather in those last couple pictures. I'm currently using the Eucris Cream and adore the scent. I think my next cream will be the Simpsons one that has just arrived down under, followed by maybe the Eucris Soap, or maybe MWF...
