Today is the birthday of Michael Jordan, IMO the best basketball player to ever play the game. Happy birthday, Michael.

Hard to believe Jordan is 50 years old. The greatest of all times.

As an avid Jazz Fan I'm sticking with "he pushed off".

I grew up in Chicago and was lucky enough to see him his entire career. I concur John, he is the best basketball player of all time and if he would not have retired twice, he would have won ten titles, maybe more.

I only saw him once, when I was in Chicago for a conference. I had a free evening and asked the hotel concierge what he would suggest I do. He asked if I wanted a free ticket to a Bulls game, since another guest wasn't able to use it and had turned it in. I went to the game, and Michael had one of his 50-pointers.

MJ was very special indeed, he must have been, as it seemed everyone in the UK knew who he was, and believe me we're not a basketball loving nation, football (soccer) is by far the biggest sport in the UK.

In the later 80's and 90's I remember hunting down Nike Air Jordan's in London when new pairs would be released, in fact I believe I've still got a couple of pairs from the early to mid 90's...

Also at that time I remember one of our friends had cable or satellite TV (not very common in the UK back then) and would record the NBA Finals, then we would all meet round someones house for a weekend of watching his Airness (and Co).

Here's what The Guardian (UK newspaper I happen to read) had to say about MJ turning 50...
