The French Connection, Bullitt, Gone In Sixty Seconds (original) all have awesome chase scenes, but I am a huge fan of the chase through New York in The Seven Ups.

What is your favorite car or car chase movie of all time?

John Frankenheimer directed Ronin which also has great car chases. William Freidkin always knows his way around car chases (French Connection) - two of his lesser known movies also have great car chase scenes - Jade (through Chinatown in SF) and Sorceror (not a car chase scene but great truck scenes). And the scene in To Live and Die In LA where they go The wrong way on the 405 freeway is incredible.

Recently I've been liking truck scenes in movies; I always joke that of I made a movie I would have a gratuitous truck smashing scene. A sneaky great truck scene - the beginning of Beverly Hills Cop when Eddie Murphy hanging off the back as it goes careening down side streets.

I'll pick one more obscure, SHORT TIME (1990). 20+ years and still not on DVD in this country. I had to order a region free from Brazil several years ago.

That's a great one. There was a pretty cruddy "remake" called Joy Ride, with Paul Walker that came out around 2000. Also the truck scene in Terminator 2 is incredible. Of course all of this discussion presupposes that the scene needs to be physical stunt work; the multi-layered car/motorcycle/truck scene in the second Matrix movie is a masterpiece of this type of scene, and lasts almost 15 minutes.

I can't believe I forgot about Death Proof. The end scene is a true car chase scene and tons and tons of great physical stunt work on display (especially with the girl strapped to the hood). I can't believe I forgot about that movie! That movie is basically Quentin Tarantino saying "I'll show you a car chase movie!"

I'd have to go with the first two Bourne movies, even though I'm not really into the car chases. I feel that it's just filler and doesn't do much for the story line.

The original Bullit with Steve McQueen. Everything else is simply an afterthought. Wink

Bullitt. Steve McQueen, a fastback Mustang and San Francisco. Imitated but never duplicated. The chase in the French Connection is pretty darned good too.
