OK Gents,

I got my annual bonus this year (Yeah for Capitalism Biggrin ) so I have some cash to blow on 1 or 2 luxury shave soaps/creams.

Besides the obvious MdC, is there another soap I should try?

Tabula Rasa is really good stuff! Also if you can wait, its (hopefully) going to be fougere-palooza soon as MdC looks set to release their fougere scent in mid-April and the Bullgoose-Valobra fougere collaboration sometime in Spring.

Spencer & Devon shave cream is very nice.

It's not exactly breaking the bank, but it's hard to find a better performer than Provence Sante for my money.

LOL. That would certainly be a chunk of change, but my bonus wasn't that good. Biggrin

What about Czech & Speake? Isn't their stuff made by Valobra too?

Performance-wise it does everyone you want it to. And it's scent is beguiling. However I tend to like more straight-forward scents. For some reason my nose doesn't seem to work all that well in the mornings. I used to sniff my C&S Oxford & Cambridge whenever I found myself in the bathroom (sometimes ducking in just to smell it). But when I would lather up, I'd lose the scent. And I've found that straight-forward or "single note" scents do better for me in that instance, like lavender or lime.

One exception is fougere and if MdC's bath soap fougere scent is any indication, I would have to be sleep-shaving to avoid it!

What does the regular scented MdC smell like? I just priced out shipping for MdC. Since it makes up roughly 35% of the overall cost I might want to wait for the fougere.

It smells like that best shave a man can get! Winky

I have come to the conclusion that my sniffer doesn't pick up lavender like others do & it's very sensitive to mint (fortunate for me as I love mint). I cannot smell lavender at all, though my wife says it's in the background. This correlates with my experience with RazoRock King Louis. All I could smell of this soap reminded me of play-doh. With MdC the front running scent for me is a herbaceous mint, not cloying at all. Behind the mint is Rosemary. The spicy background I pick up appears to be coming from the Benson (benzoin resin) along with a very faint vanilla.

I wonder why it wasn't called "Tabula Rasage"? Smile

Unsure how tongue in cheek that comment was, but Tabula Rasa ins't a meaningless phrase for anyone who didn't know.

See the little smiley Smile

Yes, I was punning. But in any case Tabula Rasa seems to me a strange choice of name for a shaving soap... "Blank Slate". Maybe something to do with 'clean shave'? Hence I extended the 'humour'. Tch, eh?

If you haven't tried, I suggest TOBS Jermyn Street Soap or Cream. It's my favorite scent. Otherwise, if you can find it, try getting the new TOBS Grapefruit Cream. I suspect it'll smell amazing.

I have a sample of Cream that I need to try. I have heard great things about the scent. I have been working through some other samples but I may have to throw this one into the lineup next.

C&S Oxford and Cambridge would be an excellent choice.
