Thanks to the generosity of Tonsorius, I had an opportunity to try a puck of Calani, a veggie soap made in Germany (despite its Italian-sounding name). It was the "Dubai" scent.

I found the soap easy to lather, slick and cushioney, with a subdued scent (my preference but not everyone's). Although the lather tended to dry out and thin out on the second pass, that was easily solved by replenishing from the puck. Calani contains potassium sterate and did not leave my skin feeling dry. Price, of course, is rated a "10" because it was free to me, a very nice gift indeed.

Overall, I recommend this soap. The only US distributor I know of is http://www.royalshave.com, though perhaps it is more readily available in Europe.

Thanks, Marius.

Calani is nice, I've tried almost all of them. Not that cheap but worth the price in my opinion. Some of there soaps are pretty heavy scented, at least that's what my wife tells me (I don't have a complete sense of smell anymore because of accident). Oriental Plum seems to be a favorite among many who tried there soaps.

I love Calani soaps. For me, they are as good as you can get when concerning to artisan soaps. The best artisan soap that you can buy, period. With the exception of Martin de Candre - but Calani has so much better scents...

Iberisch Sonne (Iberian Sun), Dubai and Malabar are my favourite scents. I've had the honour to organise a group-buy for the Portuguese and Brazilian members of barbearclassico.com... here's a picture of what happened:

Iberische Sonne smells like oranges, a very nice scent for the Summer. Dubai smells more exotic, and the same goes for Malabar, two wonderful scents. The Bay Rum is awesome too.
Eis Engel smells a bit like cedar, but it is a very discrete scent. Oriental plum is very sweet and strong, I didn't care much for it. Cadre Noir smells a bit like Drakkar Noir, but a tad fresher.
Classic Havana reminds Tabac, but a bit more refined. And Highland Honey, well... smells exactly like that: honey!

Thanks for the reviews and scent descriptions guys!

I was fortunate enough to get to try a sample of the Calani Gentleman thanks to my good buddy Mark.

It was a very nice soap that performed every bit as well, if not better than MdC.

The scent was nice. Very clean, fresh and slightly aquatic. If any of you remember what the Edge shaving gel with the orange cap smells like, it smelled just like that to me.

The Calani soaps are something that I would like to revisit in the future. The Honey, Iberian Sun, Dubai and Malabar all sound very nice.

Lol, I hope to be trying on some Calani any day now. Smile The difference between Calani and Cannoli, is that the first one is worn temporarily. It comes right off. The other isn't and doesn't.

Cathy makes very good soaps - they're very popular on the gutrasiert.de forum. I know, because I'm a member there.

Marius:

According to Cathy, the artisan soapmaker, some time ago, she stopped making sticks...
Is she making them again?

Calani also sells deodorants that with the same fragrances as the shaving soaps. Has anyone tried their deodorants?

This reminds me, I should bug the guy at RoyalShave to see if he's going to get their Earl Grey scent in stock.

I believe it's cheaper if you buy the soap straight from her site. That's what I do, the shipping charge isn't even expensive. Check it out. Cool

Top shelf soap with great scents. That pic of the sticks gave me pause...would love these soaps in stick form. I just ordered 9 pucks...I prefer ordering direct from the maker. Very reasonable prices.

I've been willing to try these soaps for a while but the only (RoyalShave) vendor that sells them charges an INSANE amount for the shipping from US to Mexico. 69 dollars to be precise. I've contacted the manufacturer directly, but she didn't answer me. No luck for me at the time with Calani.

Calani is just an excellent soap (thanks nick/greekguy for your review and multiple responses to all of my questions).

The sticks are still available on a few sites, but pricing including shipping may be high.

I'll do that. RoyalShave isn't going to carry the Earl Grey anyway.
