Muhle customer service sent me the following email in response to my inquiry regarding the toothed comb razor AKA R41

" Dear Jerry,
we have launched the redesigned version of the R41 razor in late 2011. We no longer sell the 2011 version and if you order now, you will be receiving the new design.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen / best regards,

Beate Unger

Well done Jerry, I'm sure anyone considering the R41 is happy to have that cleared up.

I ordered one as well...BUT are we sure he is not comparing the original R41 OC which was similar to the Merkur OC and in fact used the same head....or is it just the change from the 18.5mm top plate to the 20mm to curve the blade a bit more.Well I guess we will find out in a week or so when we receive our own to measure and compare.Huh

I would say no Harvy. The R41 you are thinking about came out in 2009' then replaced with the 2011 beast. That is when it was replaced with the less aggressive R41 some time in 2012. Now its being called by some vendors "new 2013" . I think vendors such as Connaught didn't even realize the change. I had sent Paul an email asking about the revised R41 and the reply was they were not aware but soon after his advertising says 2013' new model. Now Muhle is basically admitting they made a change.
I personally will not know the difference until I receive mine and can compare it to the old R41 beast. I will know instantly after the first pass. I will also measure the top plate.

I have one on order from Connaught. I trust it truly is the newer model. I held off buying the earlier version because of all the awful reviews and apparent bloodletting. I know some loved it, cool. Sounded a bit too much like I, too, would have regretted shaving with the earlier version. When it arrives, I will measure it and try it out. If it's not the newer model, it's going back. Unless, of course, I like it Smile

Connaught says its the new model so I am sure it will be. As I said before I don't think any of the merchants even realized what they were selling until recently.

It is disappointing that Muhle did not inform either their vendors or customers of the change. Only after information regarding the design changes to the R41 surfaced on a number of shaving forums did they acknowledge a change, and even that token response was forthcoming only after specific inquires were made regarding the issue. And they have yet to issue any statement that I am aware of regarding the specific changes that were made and how they affect the razor's performance.

Yes, it does seem a bit remiss to say the least. Wonder why they chose not to let everyone know? It couldn't have been embarrassment after a lot of criticism over the previous beast ( and anyway, lots of folk liked them just fine) ... they could easily have marketed it as a new, milder version. Simple. Just seem a bit loopy not to have done that.

Thanks for the info, Jerry.

Redesigned 'late 2011' ... purchase date alone will not necessarily indicate which R41 one might have ... I would surmise that some vendors may have still been selling 'old' stock well into 2012 and perhaps 2013 depending on volume of sales.
