Apologies for the 'Dad' joke in the title.

A great week with the mail person.

A cute but nondescript little box

... that was worth 17 shillings and six-pence

Oh look, how cute!

It is a little toy shaving brush! It was clearly what was worth 17/6

But it really is 'wee' (small, tiny) with dimensions of:

Handle diameter 22mm
Knot diameter 13mm
Handle height 26mm
Loft 35mm
Overall height 61mm

I knew that the 'Wee Scott' was 'wee' but I wasn't expecting THIS small.

To give some idea of comparative size here are some of my other butterscotch Simpsons (taken straight out of my rotation so showing the effects of use)

All lined up they are (L - R): No. 10, No. 41, M1, B2, The Duke, Wee Scott

Same again but without The Duke

Not sure what to do with this one. I wanted to try one and knew they were small - but this is smaller than I expected!

Whoa! Could it be an elusive "Nano"? AND it looks unused!

This brush:

Loft 35mm
Knot 13mm
Handle 26mm
Overall height 61mm

The current Wee Scot dimensions:

Loft 35mm
Knot 14mm
Handle 32mm
Overall height 67mm

I can mind Gary Young saying there used to be two Wee Scot's many years ago and the first was smaller than the current beastie. In fact, did he no say there was three and the largest became the Case? Yon's a fair braw collection of soncy-faced, true butterscotch Simpsons beauties. To see them amongst each other with their marks of use, signs of history, more agéd caramel colourings and lighter, yet rich custard yellows with their original knots is a sight to behold indeed! Such a collection deserves the new addition, after all, it is in many ways the most iconic Simpson of them all. Aye.

Yes three sizes in the Wee Scot:

1. - the 'nano'
2. - the current
3. - became the 'Case'

This was ANOTHER eBay purchase after a tip off from a wonderful fellow member. I don't think it is a nano, the only pic I've see of a comparison (on another forum here) has the difference as being quite marked. I'm not sure if the dimensions are that different.

The dimensions on the Wee Scot from The Superior Shave are:

Handle Diameter: 24mm
Overall Height: 66mm
Knot Diameter: 14mm
Bristle Loft: 36mm

which look pretty close to this one.

No, nor do I. Others might chime in to correct me though.

6mm height difference in the handle off a low base is significant though. That's a tiny brush, but no, it ain't the smallest one I have seen pics of. I believe drP owns a true 'Nano' Wee Scot...hope he doesn't mind me having purloined his image Smile

My heart was beginning to thump as I read the description and measured my current WeeScot. Was it the elusive and seldom seen in the wild Nano?

I wonder if it's a custom or somewhat unknown version of the Nano. It definitely isn't the WeeScot 2.

Nice find!

I will be checking the dimensions.

On another forum there is a pic of a Wee Scot 1 similar to this alongside a Wee Scot 2. The respective dimensions he gives for his pair are:

Wee Scot 1(nano)
Loft height = 32
Loft diameter = 12 - 13
Handle height = 24
Handle diameter = 20

2011 Wee Scot 2
Loft height = 35
Loft diameter = 13 - 14
Handle height = 31
Handle diameter = 24

Maybe what we have then is neither, but a 'tweeny': a cross between a Wee Scot and a Nano.

How about "Weeno"?

OK, so now the double checked measurements!

This brush

Loft height = 35
Loft diameter = 13
Handle height = 26
Handle diameter = 21.5
Weight 13g

Wee Scot 1 (nano) from B&B member

Loft height = 32
Loft diameter = 12 - 13
Handle height = 24
Handle diameter = 20
Weight 9.5g

2011 Wee Scot from B&B member

Loft height = 35
Loft diameter = 13 - 14
Handle height = 31
Handle diameter = 24
Weight 18.5g

Current Wee Scot from Superior Shave

Loft height = 36
Loft diameter = 14
Handle height = 30
Handle diameter = 24
Weight 18 g

So this brush is clearly somewhere between the Wee Scot 1 (nano) and the Wee Scot 2 (modern).

I recall somewhere Gary Young saying that the Wee Scot was the 'graduation test' for a brushmaker wanting to become a master brushmaker. Maybe with this bespoke approach this was one of the test examples?

In any event an interesting find!

Interesting.

Yes, that is what Gary wrote.

Or made by a different gent? Maybe the early ones are all just slightly different to reflect the maker? Just supposing. Maybe Gary knows more.

OK, well it seems pretty clear on the measurements that we have a new variation.

Anybody else out there with a 'nano' and we can add in other specs

I think I'm calling this more like a Wee Scot 1 than the Wee Scot 2 - what do others think?
