Lately I've been getting my favorite lathers from non-tallow based soaps. As an UltraLatherer I originally thought only the best tallow super-fatted soaps would work. Through some experimenting with BrianSD we came to the conclusion that pretty much any soap made for shaving (and even some not made for shaving) can make an UltraLather.

While there are certainly some great tallow-based soaps (P.160 being my favorite), I'd like to see who else prefers their non-tallow soaps & how they'd rank their top 5.

Top 5 Non-Tallow:
  1. Martin de Candre - Savon À Raser
  2. Antica Barbieria Colla Bitter Almond
  3. RazoRock LaFamiglia / TFS
  4. Dr. Dittmar
  5. De Vergulde Hand

Phil, everytime you reference that it makes me think that if I ever must change professions that I may start working with roofing tar so I can smell this even more. Tongue

Brian I have no idea how that rumor began about non-tallow soaps. But as you know I always thought it was just flat wrong. Some of the very best soaps I was using were non-tallow based as I was reading the wisdom about tallow soaps. Most times I just shook my head and never challenged it because I'd have been swimming upstream while anticipating folks from the shore throwing barbed spears at me.

That having been written, I suspect there are terrible soaps in both ingredient camps. One ingredient I shun like a leper is olive oil if the soap/cream is intended to lather. One tallow based soap that was real junk was Colgate mug soap.

Just 5? The only 5 non-tallow soaps in my cabinet. All are fantastic performers, some much better, some much more expensive, than others, but no slackers here at all.

MdC scented and unscented (cheat #1)
dVH
Klar Seifen & Kabinett (Yeah, I cheated again)
Provence Sante
Boots

Now if you open it up to creams and croaps the list is much larger.

Phil, I can't guarantee you'd like MdC even with this trick, but if one ages the MdC for quite some time, OK, think fine wine, it mellows down quite a bit. Mine has been aging now for over a year (lid in place and snugged down) and it's really getting quite nice. I know where you're coming from with the hot tar scent, but it's really just strong rosemary. Smile Even the unscented smells slightly of it just by being near the scented version while aging uncovered. The unscented smells almost lemony, but it's faint rosemary.

Brian, croaps & creams are welcome here too. I tend to generalize and call them all soap. I mean they are all soap, some just have a head start in the water department. Winky Biggrin

In that case, I've got TOBS, TFS, RazorRock XXX, MdC, and I think that's actually it.

In terms of hard soap, only MdC.

Dr Selby has tallow on it.The Stearic Acid , in this particular case , comes from tallow. The people from Terry SL (the company behind Dr Selby ) told me that a year ago.

If we include soft soap, I have Acqua di Parma right below Martin de Candre and right with Institut Karite. I want to try Klar Kabinett and Klar Seifen as soon as I can find it on sale. Biggrin

I include creams and croaps as soap also Brian, I just didn't know if you were for this.

Now I'm way over 5. These are added.

Lider
Wars
Bond
Proraso (Bigelow)
Nivea (I suspect)
ABCBA (Antica Barbieria Colla Bitter Almond)
3P (I suspect)

OK. Oh my! Ranking them... that's difficult.

OK, the finished list...

MdC
ABCBA/Klar Seifen
Provence Sante
Bond/Proraso

And I'm still over 5, but I must include ties.

I only use non-tallow soaps, and have way too many. All the soaps I have (and I have over 30) lather well and give a great experience. My top few are based mostly on scents.

Top Few:
MdC
Jabonman
SMN
XXX
Klar sport/Kabinett
Floris
QED Sandalwood/B&B

The only soap I haven't figured out yet, is calani.
