With my birthday coming up, SWMBO has decided to let me pick a brush of my choice under $250. Since I dont have a single brush over $100, I am not sure which one to go for. Here is what I am looking for, so I am hoping you guys can help me pick something.

- I am mostly a soap user, but I have a few creams.
- I face or bowl lather depending on mood, but off late its been face lather.
- Would prefer very soft tips with some backbone.
- Would prefer a larger knot - 26mm or higher (my largest brush right now is 24 mm).
- Not sure about the brush density.

Based on reading the forums, it looks like the following might be good candidates:

- Thater 4125/2 two band fan
- Rooney heritage 2XL

Any other suggestions?

There are many fine brushes and your choices are very good.
i would suggest looking into these:
* WSP Stubby 2-band when it is available or even the HMW Stubby
* Chubby 2 2-band, although you might find the Chubby 2 a bit soft.

Good luck.

If I had $250 to spend on a shaving brush it would be either a Simpson Manchurian, Shavemac D01 custom or Rooney 2-band. Not because I have used those brushes and enjoy them, but rather they are brushes that I want to try but haven't been able to justify the entry fee.

Simpson Polo Manchurian, in the largest size your budget allows. I bought my PL10 butterscotch manchurian from Mark directly, and its a work of art.

I have a Seville Row 3824 (24 mm knot) which is 3 months old and a Shavemac 177 (23mm knot) which is 2 months old. The 3824 started out a little softer than the 177 but the 177 had a slightly better backbone. After one month the Shavemac was softer with still slightly firmer backbone. Both Lather very well but the 177 seems to give up the lather to your face a little easier. The printing on the 3824 is just beginning to come off. The 177 is my favorite and I just ordered another and await my silvertip Do1 from Shavemac. Shavemac has many different options that SR doesnt have. Also the service at Shavemac is excellent. They sure look alike, but my two brushes are acting differently with my preference being the 177.

I have a Thater 4125/2 two band bulb and a 49125/0 three band bulb. Put me in the "not impressed" column. They look good and feel soft, but for face lathering soaps I prefer a Simpson Best or Rooney Silvertip.

A 2XL in tortoise. They are the prettiest brush out at the moment.
