I have no clue what the Mergress really is. Always thought it's just a plain Jane Progress pimped with a stainless steel knob instead of the original nicotine-yellow bakelite knob. Or is there more to it?

First one! Although alignment may be better too!

The Mergress is tweaked so the setting numbers line up correctly and it gets a new end knob.

Expect a well balanced razor. Lists of audible feedback.

I suspect I will be in the minority on this one, but I owned two of them and got rid of both. I wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be

I really want one if these but I've got a long handled progress and a short handled Mer.

Hmmm...

Ordered the long handled version myself. I know the workmanship on the upgrade is solid and reliable, but I am unsure of the Progress part of the razor. I guess I'll find out soon enough. Smile

If it makes you feel better (just in case you felt badly about being in the minority) I didn't think it was for me either. The workmanship is top notch and it definitely looks cool, but it just felt a bit cumbersome to me.

I found the balance to be on the mark on both of the specimens I had (both long handles). But the alignment on the head wasn't accurate and if I recall correctly the cap plate had a fair amount of wiggle in it.

With the arrow properly lines up and everything tightened, I expect things to be well locked in place. But that wasn't my experience.

I sold one and returned the second.

versatile razor, can go from very mild to the wild side. nice balance. the metal knob adds bling but i kind of like the plastic knob, also.

some have QC issues, apparently the modified ones address the issues with alignment and the adjustment setting.

The Progress/Mergress is, IMO, the best solid bar razor out there. It's flexiblilty is unmatched. Great audible feedback. Excellent value for the money. Just a real pleasure to use. Enjoy.

Although I think what Mer does with the razors is mervellous (see what I did there? Rolleyes), I actually prefer the original plastic knob. Some of the BRW replacement wooden knobs were pretty cool too but ultimately, I still like the original best.

Well, for me I found its profile to be bulky and not a good match for my face. Compare its profile with any other solid bar razor, and most will have less bulk with similar blade gap, and for whatever reason the bulk just didn't complement my face. I suppose I could have adjusted my technique to accommodate it, but apathy kicked in and I realized I have a lot razors that do work on my face with my poor technique. Plus, there are more razors I want to try so I decided to free up den space and money by selling mine.

I heartily concur on the plastic knob. I really like the look of mine. Right now, my short handled progress really is my favorite razor. But this thread really is about the Mergress, I know. Claus, you will truly enjoy it I'm sure. The modifications made to it are classy and well done but the real star is the razor itself.

Also, I find it curious that not too many folks mention the beautiful stamping on the bottom of the base plate on the underside. I love that about the Progress! Really elevates the look in my opinion.
