I was in the city today running errands with Grace (my German Shepherd) and I decided we should swing by Merz Apothecary as I have been pining for I Coloniali. Maybe it's the terra cota bowl, maybe it's Phil's nondescript description of the scent. Here is what Phil has listed on his site:

The scent is intoxicating but equally puzzling. What is it exactly? It is a bit smokey and reminds me a bit of a fine pipe tobacco.

So I find the soap, take off the top, take a deep breath really liking what I smell and for the life of me I cannot describe it. I don't smell pipe tobacco, but I honestly cannot describe what I smell. I'll give it a whirl tonight, but I was wondering if anyone out there has some and what the scent smells like to them.

I think is smells more like a nice aromatic Honeysuckle vine in bloom. I love the smell and the cool sensation of menthol on the skin. This is one of my favorites that I cannot imagine not having in my rotation.

Its a excellent italian shaving soap, and its scent its like a mix of dry appricots with some woody notes (maybe even smoky).
With this soap,I get better results with bagder hair brushes that boar ones, and also provides an excellent skin care (the mango butter and lanolin helps a lot).
The terracotta pot is also a classic!

I have this soap. Cannot describe the scent either.
I have better results with badger brushes too, but where this soap really shines is with my horse brushes. Don't really know why.

It is an outstanding shaving soap, excellent protection, glide and skincare properties. And the menthol is awesome!

This is perhaps the most regarded soap in the German forum. In an 100 page thread, they call it "Die Gottlichë I Coloniali" - "The Divine I Coloniali" Biggrin

Great soap indeed! The scent is pretty much all its own. One of the nice things if that the menthol doesn't drive the scent, it doesn't smell "mentholated". The first few times I used it I kept forgetting it had menthol and got nervous for a few seconds after my face started cooling down. Of course, the terracotta bowl adds to the experience as well.

Okay, I am intrigued by the various descriptions of the scent. I have got to give this soap a try and check it out for myself. Any soap that has to the potential to smell like honeysuckle vine in bloom is a definite must try for me.

I've used the soap once and really like it. I think Tiestes description of appricot and smoke is the closest I've heard. I know this is my Dads favorite and he has tried at least 100 I'm sure. Very good stuff.

Well tonight I obviously unsealed the puck, and gave it a whirl. Tonight seemed like a good night as it has been a couple days since I last shaved as my prior shave was an adjustable debacle. Lots of bumps and burn so I took a couple days off to let things calm down.

Before I describe what I think it smells like, I must say this soft soap left such a FANTASTIC feeling on my face after the shave. I cannot believe how moist and smooth it is even without any AS or balm. Rich lather with incredible lubrication. By far the best soap I have used. It moves straight to the top of my list above Cella and the FAT.

As far as what it smelled like once lathered and brushed into my face, I disagree with the apricot aspect, I definitely think I can smell aged mango in there (which makes sense as there is mango oil in it). I also detect a woodsy scent. Maybe some smoke in the woods, I am not sure. To me, I would describe it as a walk in a dense forest with a nice hint of mango. A very manly smell.

Great, just what I need to hear, another top-of-the-line soap review.

I will say, that I use the I Coloniali Rhubarb AS milk and it's outstanding.

BTW, I asked SWMBO what she thought it smelled like and she said it smelled like sexy, manly incense. I was pretty sure that was a good thing.

With as many products that either change formulation for the worse, or just go away completely, I try just about everything I can afford to get my hands on. Even if I end up not liking it, at least I can say I got to try it.

Is the bowl for this soap worth buying or do you just buy the refill?

It depends on whether you wish a unique bowl. I personally think the terracota bowl is worth the money for the collection.

This stuff has been on my short list for a long time. I'm also interested in the rhubarb cream, which I've heard is very good as well. A lot of places have it listed but it's out of stock pretty much everywhere (except the refills).
