What's yours?

I have two razors I am considering restoring, each with different grinds. The half-hollow is waffer thin and sings, but scares the living out of me.

Do you find the various grinds shave different or is it more of a visual preference?

Well Mike in my case variety is the spice of life, I like shaving with lots of different grinds, from full and extra hollows to quarter hollows and Kamisori grinds, the most important factor with all razors is how well they are honed stropped correctly and everything else should just fall into place.

Jamie.

They shave differently.

Wedges won't flex at all at the tip. They also have a lot more momentum behind the cut.

Really thin hollows will noticeably flex if enough pressure is applied. Whether you should be applying that much pressure is a different topic. I don't have the answer off the top of my head.

I am still getting started (about 3 months with a str8), and after trying hollow grind and wedges, I slightly prefer the stiffness and quietness of the wedges. Of course I am sure in a few weeks/months things will change as I get more experience Biggrin

I have all sorts of different grinds on my straights. I use them all, but I gravitate to the full- and 3/4-hollow grinds. Still, I'll throw in the occasional 8/8" full wedge.........just for variety.

All great responses gents... Thanks.

Any difference in how various grinds are maintained? I am primarily concerned about stripping as honing is something I think I would like to leave to a pro..

Honing yes, but stropping no. I won't go into the details unless someone else wants me to.

I lean towards the heavier grinds, like half and full hollow. I find that they provide more heft.

I have had a few shaves with the Hart Steel 1/4 ground razor and it has been quite pleasant.

Full hollow and extra hollow! The more hollow the better.

I enjoy them all. A great shave trumps type of grind for me.

Gentlemen,
More and more I seem to gravitate toward the hollow blades. I have half hollows, three-quarter hollows and wedges. All are fine and an enjoyable shave. The hollow is special.

I'm constantly going back and forth over which grind I like best - can't make up my mind. I've got blades from extra heavy to extra hollow. Usually, my preference is the last one I used, until I use the next one! LOL..

A Second on Doclbz. The shave and maintainability are easier.

Full hollow, but not the extra singing though.
