Let's see those shaves. Extra points for Cinco de Mayo Themed shaves. Cool

Sunday, May 5th

Razor: Merkur Progress
Blade: Bluebird
Brush: J.L. Petree Silvertip
Pre-Shave: Musgo Real Glyce Lime
Soap: Penhaligons English Fern (Thanks Diggity)
Scuttle: Ladysea Scuttle
A/S: Floid Amber

An excellent shave. The English Fern soap that I recently picked up from Nathan is the real deal and produced mounds of rich lather. The Progress and Bluebird blade did an outstanding job and the Floid Amber was a nice change of pace.

Well, this is really a Shave of Yesterday: I shaved very, very late today . . .

Yesterday I received (from Bull Goose Shaving) a Cadet Robusto razor, a three-piece open-comb razor that looks very much like a vintage Gillette.

I have been sick today, so I didn’t shave this morning. But this evening I started feeling much better. I started laying out my gear for my shave in the morning and then began washing my face before going to bed. But as I washed my face, using a bulk sandalwood soap from Whole Foods, I began building a lather . . .

So I went ahead and shaved. I hadn’t shaved since seven o’clock since yesterday morning, so I had more of a beard than I usually do. But the Robusto, loaded with a Gillette Super Thin, handled it very well. I ended up with a very, very smooth shave–-a real pleasure after feeling so crummy almost all day.

I don’t think that the Robusto is a terribly aggressive razor, and it felt very predictable loaded with the Gillette Super Thin.

I like the weight of the razor, and I like the size of the handle. I’ve taken to propping my pinkie on the very tip of my Gillettes, which are all shorter than any of my modern razors (although perhaps my ’63 Slim Adjustable is close to the length of the Robusto). The Robusto is a trifle longer than the only Gillette Tech that I own (a 1938-41 model, if I understand my Gillettes–-which seems unlikely).

I’m looking forward to more shaves with this razor. But I think that I may have found my new travel razor.

The elements of the shave:

1. Preshave: Shea Moisture Shea Butter and African Black Soap Shave Butter (I’m trying to find a use for this stuff . . .);

2. Soap: Mitchell’s Wool Fat shaving soap–-a classic that I tried for the first time;

3. Brush: Omega 830 boar-bristle brush (a beauty);

4. Razor: Cadet Robusto;

5. Blade: Gillette Super Thin;

6. Aftershave: Mennen Skin Bracer.

The Skin Bracer will certainly identify any small nicks, weepers, or razor burn. But tonight it just felt wonderfully cooling–-even bracing! Perhaps they could somehow refer to that characteristic in the marketing?

#6 Horsehair
Dovo Bismarck 5/8
Noxzema SC
Lubriderm unscented moisturizer
Booster Mosswood AS

All I can say is what a wonderful shave. I'm so BBS after using my Dovo Bismarck and it felt so good to use my Noxzema cream which is my absolute number one favorite of all creams and soaps. The scent, lather, and skincare cannot be beaten, and it has a great cooling sensation. Why this stuff was discontinued is beyond me. The Booster Mosswood is a great Canadian classic - a lot of barbershops use it on their customers.

Felt like getting the entire SOTD kit in the shot today as I usually only highlight a few items. After using the Streamline for 5 straight shaves and a No Shave Day yesterday, the Cobra came in and performed splendidly. Burly is quickly becoming a favorite. I'm looking forward to getting my Stubby SuperFine back so I can compare them side by side.
