Hello all-

Well, I guess I am the newest newbie and just wanted to say how glad I am to be able to join and be a part of this group and site. I have looked around here and am impressed with the great website and all the experience, knowledge and wisdom of all you members here.
I have just discovered you and the wet shaving tradition and wonder if I might ask for everyone’s guidance and advice as I am just beginning my journey down this road again. FYI - I am now 60 and I previously wet shaved as a teenager only and I grew a beard in the 70’s and have had a beard all these years since. So I have experience with a DE and feel very comfortable with the technique.
I have recently clean shaven and I am new again at this and I am not a collector, but only looking for a really good vintage razor to purchase to shave as my good daily “user’s” razor that I will really enjoy using every morning.
From the models that I have seen that I feel I might be interested in trying are the Aristocrat, Diplomat, Executive and President Styles. My questions are this…
1. It seems that I have read that the gold finish razors do not wear as well as the silver ones?
2. Of the models I listed, are they all gold finish, except the President?
3. What model do you recommend as I do NOT want to spend a great deal?
4. I have read it is affordable to get them refinished. So if I purchase one that needs it, would you recommend that and I could finish any of the models in rhodium, nickel, silver rather than gold?
5. I appreciate your collective wisdom on my starting thoughts!
6.
Thank you!

Are you heartset on DE or are you wiling to go SE?

Rhodium seems to be the most highly thought of; expensive but very durable. I've priced it our near $100

Welcome to The Shave Nook.

All of those old Gillette's get good reviews so it will take someone wiser than I to give advise on them.

As for as restoring and re-plating, I would contact our good vendor Razor Emporium

Welcome to The Shave Nook!

Here is something that might be of service to you:
http://mr-razor.com/Rasierer/One-Piece%2...%20bar.htm

The razors you mentioned are very nice, but have you ever considered getting a modern stainless steel one such as the Weber. If you are looking for a TTO (butterfly door) one, there are many good modern ones that are made very well such as the Cadet and RazoRock ones. Good luck.

Welcome to the Nook! I have a Gillette Senator refinished in Rhodium which I love!

Have you consider a birth year razor? Or your father's birth year? (what I have).

I also equally enjoy my Above The Tie Stainless razor, fun to use both ends of the spectrum.

Hey there and welcome to The Shave Nook... Sorry I can't answer your question. I became a lover of single edge razors before I ever had a chance to try any of those Gillettes. Good Luck though. I'm sure some one with the knowledge you seek will chime in soon...

I have a few DE's in my collection, and after this weekend I am a confirmed LOSER. They're all vintage. PM me and we can discuss.

Hi ONESHAVE,

Welcome to The Shave Nook! Biggrin

I'm not an expert on vintage razors, so I'll leave it to the wise veterans of Shave Nook to answer all your questions. Wink
