Gentlemen,
Life is full of surprises. Not all good, of course. Then there are those days when a sweet surprise colors what already is a good day.
I drive to Chicago about once every two weeks or less and spend time with my brother. It's a delightful visit for both of us. Sometimes we take a train to downtown Chicago for lunch at a fancy restaurant. Sometimes we stay at his home and enjoy his cooking.
We talk about life in the old country, about our parents, about our younger days, about food and wine, and even about straight razors, although he does not shave with them. It's a great time.
Today I drove down to Chicago, about 90 miles south, and we stayed home, feasting on delicious Assyrian food. I had not seen my brother for about a month, because he was traveling in Europe for about two weeks. There was much to talk about his trip and the wonderful foods and wines he enjoyed.
Somewhere during our conversation, he stopped and said, "Oh, I brought you something."
It was a jar of Martin de Candre.
What sweeter surprise than a jar of this celestial shaving soap? He knows how fond of this soap I am.
On the drive home, I bought two restored straight razors over the phone from a good friend: a 5/8 Bengal and a 5/8 French razor called Gelle Prepes New America France. When I arrived home, I had two more immaculate eBay razors waiting for me: a 5/8 Keen Kutter and a Griffin.
Indeed, gentlemen, it has been a good day and one full of surprises. Have you had such sweet surprises recently?

Sounds like a great day!

My parents recently returned from a holiday in Italy, and I was overjoyed to be handed a bag of goodies on their return. My loot included a big block of Cella, Valobra, Proraso and TOBS aftershave. I was very happy indeed!

Obie, just the nice visit with your brother would have made it a great day. All the goodies were just icing on the cake. You must be living right.

I have not had a day like that in a long time.

Sounds like it was a great day, with a wonderful present. It's a shame you can't convert your bother over to the world of wet shaving.

A nice story!

I received the confirmation of the Morris and Forndran group buy brush on the day I got back from our holidays.
Not a bad surprise!
