In this thread, you can see a video of Teiste face-lathering, using a vintage Musgo Real shaving stick and a Semogue LE2011 boar size1.

Here, I will try to talk a little about that vintage shaving stick.

The Musgo Real stick was an outstanding discovery... a member of the Portuguese forum (Islander, also a member here), found a nice stash of them, still in their original package, and wrapped in some kind of tracing paper, forgotten on an old drugstore, in the beautiful island of Madeira, in the Atlantic, where he lives.

Needless to say that several members of the Portuguese forum adopted the sticks, and there's none available now.

I am lucky enough to have it. And before you ask... they are not for sale!

In the package, you can see the slogan that advertised this sticks: "Um stick todo perfume" (in english: "A stick [that is] all perfume")...

..."Um perfume todo espuma" (in english: "a perfume[that is] all lather").

We estimate that this vintage soap was probably produced somewhere between the 30's - 60's or so, but that is just an extremely rough estimate. The truth is that no one is sure.
Comparing with this advertising from 1939, the lettering and slogan seems to be very much alike.

Some say that this soap is surely a tallow soap, maybe containing lanolin as well. Well... it surely feels and behaves like a tallow soap. And at that time, Ach. Brito/Claus Porto were known for producing mainly tallow soaps.
But the product doesn't have any ingredients list, or a bar code either. I wouldn't be surprised if this soap contain lanolin as well. But no-one can be sure.

Some photos, taken from my SotD's:

And some images of the lather, produced with a Vulfix 404 "Grosvenor" boar/badger brush:

And of course, the video by Teiste:

I really think that Claus Porto/Ach Brito should have a shaving soap in their portfolio. But unfortunately, I don't think that something like that will happen in the near future. Sad

I hope you enjoy reading this!

That is a soap I would like to try. Besides the stick, did Musgo Real ever make a shaving puck? Too bad nobody can convince them to re-release the shaving stick. It would surely sell.

No shaving puck, AFAIK.

At the Ach. Brito's headquarters, they have a small museum, with some vintage products. There's no shaving pucks there, only shaving sticks and "shaving powder soaps". The latter ones (shaving soaps in a powder form) were widely used by Portuguese barbers at the time.

Also some nice vintage talc cans featured on the left. Wink (picture courtesy of a_soares, a member of the Portuguese forum)

Thanks to a good member of the Portuguese shaving forum http://www.barbearclassico.com , I was lucky to get one of these vintage shaving sticks made by Musgo Real.

I dont know how many years this stick has (maybe is from the 60's/70's,Oversaturn maybe has more info about it) but got to my hands in excellent condition.

The stick comes on a cylindrical green cardboard box and a metallic base.I do like its presentation, and some brands like Speick/Valobra could learn from it.

I admit that I do like a lot Portuguese shaving creams, and my fav of all is Musgo Real : I love its classy scent and the good skin care protection which provides.I wasnt expecting this soap to have any scent (I had tried vintage soaps like Gibbs,Old Spice or Yardley and no scent was there when I tested them) but this one had a wonderful, intense scent, like the cream, but a little bit more sophisticated and elegant,I would say.Its true also that since its have beenn open, the scent is getting a little bit softer, but is still there.

There is not ingredients list on the box,but Im sure that this soap contains tallow and maybe even lanolin, since its so easy to create lather with and also its superb skin care properties.

Do you want to see how it performs?I made a video of it :

I think that we should request Ach Brito to come back with this stick! What a brilliant soap this is.[/align]

Ah, good old Portuguese products, again!
i see that you kept the products limited to Portugal with the Semogue brush to compliment the shave stick.
Great video as usually. You produce some of the best lathers on video, senhore! Keep up the great work.

I think we need another international petition. Biggrin Musgo Real really should bring this one back from the dead. It sounds like an excellent soap.

They way we're going with the La Toya, Musgo Real, probably GFT soaps, etc we wouldn't have enough time in the day...

We need to start sending a massive petition to Ach Brito and request the coming back of the Musgo Real shaving stick.
