For the 2nd night in a row I was going to use a new Futur, this time I put a blade in it.

I set it to 3, and noticed the blade was at a little angle. The top cap needed to be adjusted, but I notice it is easy to knock right back out of alignment.
Holding the razor straight up with one hand, and the cap with the other, it seems way too easy to move the cap from side to side and misaligning the blade.

It does not seem to happen set on 1, but 2 and above it does.

Is this normal?

Might be best to set it at 1....replace the top cap and then set it to 3 or above. Safest way is to do this upside down (head on towel) and turn handle keeping fingers away from blade edges. Then check the alignment. Also make sure the cap is locked on (2 posts engaged)

This is not normal. Each time you load a blade and replace the top cap the blade should be perfectly aligned regardless of setting. If the razor is still under warranty contact the vendor for instructions on how to return it for a replacement.

I gave that a try, it still moves above one.

One other test (I just tried it on mine) ...take top off(Cap) and put blade on posts and see how much play you have (should be hardly any)...maybe you have an bad blade.....at any rate try shaving with it and probably you will find no difference at all in the way it shaves even with a bit of misalignment...most of these issues do not effect the shave in any way.

The blade is tight on the posts within the head even with top cap off.

Maybe this isn't enough to worry about? I would think it is.

Does anyone have Merkur Warranty contact info? Or have had to deal with them?
I can find sales, but nothing in the US.

I had one and absolutely no issues with the top cap, alignment or settings.

I had the same problem with a gold model, as well horrible and missing plating on the top cap, it took me 3 weeks and multiple pics and emails to John @ WCS to get him to agree to a refund, and get my money back... I'll never buy anything mechanical from West Coast Shaving again.

I don't care if you "Can" shave with it, I would send it back, there's no way in hell with the price markups going on with Merkur you should be stuck with a totally inferior piece of kit.

I sent an email to dovo/merkur but they are closed until June 3rd.

I was really looking forward to using this thing.

I would not use that razor the way the uneven alignment looks. Request a refund or a replacement.

It is a common practice, unfortunately too common, for manufacturers to skip rigorous quality control and allow for slap in the tolerances. A certain percentage would ship out defective and a fraction of that, if noticed would get returned and considering the low manufacturing cost per unit for the manufacturer, the biggest cost is actually around shipping a replacement in case it's not handled by the sales channel.
In other words, the manufacturer decided to make the client his quality control.
Since I don't think it would make sense for me to pay Merkur to participate in their quality control program, I see no point in buying any of their products, regardless how good the design is on paper. It is a matter of principle for me not to support that business practice.

Merkur is sending a replacement bridge to take care of this issue. That was pretty quick customer service given they were shut down last week.

When I first saw how those razors caps went on, I didn't like it at all. I am a huge fan in the solid, three-piece design, and believe there is no better.

Having said that, it looks like the shave will be normal, even though the whole piece is obviously poorly designed, and doesn't seat properly. Looks like the cap could pop off during shaving.

It actually sits on there quite tight. I don't see a risk of it popping off unless it was not put on right after changing a blade.

Either that or someone is using way too much pressure Biggrin

Is your impression based on handling it yourself?

Not based on handling it myself - no. I have just noticed on videos and descriptions from people that there are possible design features that I don't like. That's why I decided against a Merkur Futur. That was a razor I wanted early on.
