My Rooney and Thater 2 band brushes have very soft tips. I'm considering configuring a custom Shavemac DO1 2 band and would appreciate your comments as to whether I can expect it to be as soft as the Rooney and Thater. Thanks.

From what I understand, no.

Thater's are notorious for their luxuriously soft tips, and Rooney's can be pretty mild as well.

From what I've seen and heard, Shavemac 2-Band is thought to have very strong backbone and scrubby tips. Too much scrub for some.

Keep in mind that I've only ever used their 3-Band, but I'm sure someone far more knowledgeable than myself will chime in.

Your pretty much right.

They are very scrubby and need a lot of use for the knot to relax and have more flex.

I wish they would do a non D01 version with smaller glue bumps. It would be perfect!

My favourite knots are D01 3 band. I absolutely love them.

I have a few custom Rudy Vey brushes with D01 2-band knots. Initially they were stiff and somewhat uncomfortable to use, but eventually, after about 15-20 uses, their tips softened and became much more tolerable. However, they are not as soft as any of the Rooneys that I've used have become over time, even the relatively scrubby Finests.

Thäter are soft, almost too soft for some.
Rooney are also really soft.
Shavemac D01 2-Band are stiff, almost too stiff for some.

Just make sure you get a proper loft and knot shape in your D01 2-Band and you are fine. Just don't expect a luxury soft Thäter like brush.
The D01 2-Bands are for the tough crowds, they are an acquired taste, just like Thäters are Wink

My d01 two band is a 24mm bulb knot with a 46mm loft. The backbone is amazing on this brush and so is the scrub. The tips on the other hand are extremely soft, right up there with my Thater two band. I like the brush as is but if it would have been a fan with a slightly higher loft I feel it would be my "ultimate" brush.
