I just acquired a new (to me) razor, a Leresche:

And I'm not sure if this is silver or nickel plated, thus the best way to clean it. What's the best way to tell?

A jewelry or coin shop can do a simple text for silver involving a minute acid test.
Nickle will patinate over time to a light yellow colour.

Silver will tarnish to a charcoal or black. If that hasn't been used for a time I'm guessing it's not silver. If it has been used then you're right back where you started.

Why bother with a test?

Just be gentle with a dish detergent hot water soak (for hours if need be) and a gently applied used toothbrush.

If that doesn't work then maybe have it tested?

I posted pics on the monthly acquisition thread. It cleaned up nicely, I haven't used polish yet. It will be in tomorrow's shave.

Against all natural inclination, I've fallen in love with the French razors. My top shavers, Kirby, Leresche and L'essor, are all French, all OC.

Hi

Any chance you could post some "cleaned up" photos here, and also document how you cleaned up the razor? Thank you.

Take care, Mike
