Hi lads,Geordie Sam here,I'm in two minds as to which one to buy (please don't say both) either the Muhle r89 Grande, or the Merkur 38c barber pole.
Please advise.
Sam.

From what I can tell they are both good razors - and you might end up with both sooner or later Angel

Over in this old thread EHV mentions that the 38C is the slightly more aggressive of the two, but perceived aggressiveness is very much a YMMV thing - among other things it's dependant on the blade and technique.

I would suggest going for the Merkur, but that's mostly because I own a couple of Merkur razors and like them very much. I might be biased, but at least I admits it Biggrin

Hi Sam, it's the Merkur all the way for me. The Muhle is the better finished of the two but I want a razor to shave with, not just for looks. The Muhle(EJ also) is a very mild razor and prefers the sharper blades. The Merkur is more aggressive and gives the better shave IMO.

Although I love my Muhles, it's the Merkurs I reach for more often. I have the 34c, 37c (slant) and the Progress.

The 34c gets used 3-5 days a week. It's practical, reliable and functional.
All other razors (several vintage & new DE, SE) rotate through on the other days and I get to have some fun experimenting.

My opinion :
The Muhle is nicer to look at.
The Merkur is better to shave with.

You may want to consider one of the vintage Gillette Superspeeds. Great razors and give great shaves, IMHO.

I know it wasn't on your list, but if choosing between the two brands, I would grab a new R41 and be done with it.

+1 on the R41.This assumes you have some DE experience of course.

Not on your list Sam, but the various Cadet's have long handles too. Your choice of Open Comb, Closed Comb and Twist To Open - I got one OC and one TTO and like 'em both.

Sam.

Personally I think the current Merkur Open Comb is the best razor on the market now that Muhle has moved away from the 2010 R41 model. Merkur still uses that same OC head. The finish isn't as nice as the Muhle but it makes no difference when it comes to shaving.

Oh, and with a long handle. I give you the Merkur 25C:

There is no better shaving razor at 34 Balloons or less.

I love the looks of Merkurs. I love the shaves of Muhles. The r89 is my go to razor.

The Merkur 38c I received was in really bad shape and felt sub par in finish.
On the other hand the 39c slant I received in the same order was in very condition, so it's either hit or miss with merkur, I guess.

The Mühle and Edwin jagger razors are both made to equally high quality standards, but I personally sold my Mühle R41/R89 Grande because the hollow handle felt even more hollow in the Grande version, a thing that annoyed me quite a bit.
