I've seen a few videos that people have made where they are lathering up and occasionally they make back and forth slapping then painting motions with their brushes. What's the benefit from this?

It's fun.

Honestly, that's really it. Maybe you can "slap out" some soap from deep within the knot, but the same results can be achieved using a different method.

But seriously, it's pretty fun.

IMO & IME.

I first swirl and paint and then slap. It feels like I'm doing something beneficial. Maybe it's a light massage.

Depending on how good or bad the lather is, I get into a full on fist fight with mine.

Just kidding. I do paint on the lather to fill in some of the thinner spots.
