I am looking for my birth year and quarter razor in the Gillette Black Tip. I was born in the first quarter 1951. Does anyone know if the Black Tip Super Speed was made w/ the W-1 date code? So far I only seem to be able to find W-3's.

You can check here:

I have only seen the W-3s or W-4s for 1951. Not sure of the W-1.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks guys. I found it on the "Mr. Razor" site. In 1951, only the W-3 and W-4 were made. To have my birth year and quarter razor, I will have to go to a 40's style Super Speed which are very common and readily available.

Isn't the black tip just a 40's SS with a plastic end piece?

You are correct. That is pretty much it. The black tips though, were only made in 1951 and 1952. The 40's SS was made from 1947 to 1954.

I'm a big fan of 40's SS razors. I have a 54 that I use, a couple of "spares", and I gave one to my 20 yr old son, who loves it.

I usually prefer more aggressive razors, but the 40s SS and the Schick Krona are exceptions... I love them even though they are mild.

The handle is steel (or brass, not sure which, but I know it is not aluminum) and the black tip is plastic.
