Gentlemen, 4 days ago I took delivery of a Blenheim Bouquet shaving soap in a wooden bowl, ordered direct from Penhaligon's here in the UK. The history of pen's soaps needs no introduction. What was once considered to be one of the best shaving soaps on the market, quickly hit rock bottom with the reformulation away from tallow in or around 2009.
Unfortunately, I only began using soaps in 2010 so never had the opportunity to experience the BB soap that was. I certainly did have the chance to try 2 soaps post reformulation, the last one around 18 months ago, and met with the abysmal lather that so many have experienced and reported.
The BB soap was absent from the Pen's website for the most part of this year, suggesting to me that another possible reformulation was coming. Well, it has re-appeared and on Monday last, I ordered the soap in its bowl.
All I can say is WOW. Firstly, the bowl has been replaced with a mahogany one(or mahogany appearance) with gold lettering on the lid. This bowl is of very high quality and very substantial.

The soap has lost its peach colour and is now simply plain white without any inscription on its surface. Scent, however, is identical to previous BB soaps I have tried. The performance of this soap is the biggest change. This soap is now outstanding. With a slightly damp brush, the lather just explodes. There is absolutely no sign, whatsoever, of evaporation that was so much the demise of post tallow. The lather is thick and creamy with excellent protection and glide. Post shave feel is also superb.
The ingredients list is below.

The only downside is the cost. Here in the UK, I paid £36(US$55) for the complete package, refills retail at £22(US$34).
I cannot recommend this new soap more highly. For those of us who have been longing for a return of this soap to its former glory, our prayers have been answered. This latest formulation performs as a shaving soap should, and with that BB scent, I've been on cloud nine these past few days.

Wow, very pleased to hear this. If I can find a place to grab this I would love to compare it to the last tallow version.

That's great news. Maybe there's hope for Trumpers and other soaps that had been reformulated into near-uselessness.

one point however, the picture of the bowl on their website is different to the bowl you have pictured. is that just a discrepancy on their part?

Thank you for the review. That is certainly encouraging news about the reformulated soap. I use the Blenheim Bouquet shaving cream, which is an excellent performer, as is the Blenheim Bouquet Aftershave Balm. The shaving soap will go on my shopping list for my next trip to London.

The picture on the website is their original bowl with the tallow soap in it. This new bowl is the third generation I think, the second version having PENHALIGONS simply engraved in the lid.
You'd think with the price of their products they'd update it. A bit misleading I feel.

Thank you for the info, I was thinking of ordering my first Penhaligon's cream as the post-tallow soap has the reputation we all know, but maybe I'll take my chances on the new soap instead. Smile

I bought the cream after a miserable experience with the soap a couple of years ago. The cream was great but it wasn't a soap - my preferred choice. No issues with this soap though. My only word of caution is that there are bound to be many "older" soaps still around, so ensuring you buy the latest formulation is a must.

I believe their website it notorious for being behind and showing old stock. I think they had been showing refil pucks of English Fern (tallow one), last time I looked.

Great news on the 2nd reformulation, this is the first I've read or seen any news on it.

As stated above, this will make it even more confusing when ordering to ensure you don't get the middle dud reformulation and all these vendors will be stuck with the last one they have on hand as it was not selling. Maybe they can market that reformulation as bath bars or give them away with the new ones.

They lost my business on the my BB Cream order and how they handled it, but I know many will be jumping on the chance to get this new soap...just not me. If the soap is a good as you say, I may look to try it again someday, but not any time soon Sad

Thanks for the detailed review and thoughts...Now we need some "lather shots". Smile

I'll take some lather pics tomorrow morning when lighting is natural. My photographic skills are basic to say the least so natural light will provide you all with this soap's full ability.

That is great news! There was a rumor of the aftershave being discontinued I hope that is not the case. Eventually I would like some of the soap and aftershave for my self as well as the sample store.

Well, not to disappoint, i have managed to take some lather pics. I only use my phone camera so please accept my apologies for the quality.
The brush used is my Simpson QEII Jubilee Manchurian, soaked in hot water for my usual 30 seconds, then lighty shaken a coupleof times to remove some but not all water. The soap has been wetted 5 times with hot water using a finger.

Loading the brush for 40 seconds.

Then start to palm lather

This is the lather in under a minute.

and another 30 seconds

The lather remains stable throughout unlike its predecessor.

I fear it may be true. Their website is now only showing the BB aftershave balm. The splash appears to have gone.
