I thought I should write this in a different thread so all will see.
The Pen's BB and Sartorial soaps that come in the new mahogany bowl, I have given significant praise to and rightly so. Their performance is fantastic as already said many times over.
It has baffled me though why the English Fern soap is only available as a refill and without the bowl. A few weeks ago I bought a refill puck, again direct from Pen's. Unlike the dud soap I bought over a year ago that was green in colour and had the inscription "PENHALIGONS", my latest soap, still green, carries the old tallow soap inscription "English Fern". This soap lathers very well, a far cry from my previous EF soap, but having tried the new BB and Sartorial, the EF is a little below their standard.
Dipesh recently posted that a soap company had closed down and that liquidation stock was for sale on eBay in the UK. These soaps look identical to my latest EF purchase from Pen's.
It would appear that whilst the BB and Sartorial soaps are from a new soap maker, hence the quality, I reckon that the EF soap Pen's is selling is still from the previous manufacturer.
I am happy with my new EF soap, it does perform excellently, but I feel any potential EF buyer should be aware of this probability.

Teiste, I was not aware but Emanuel posted earlier that the original company responsible for the duds was called the Standard Soap Company. This was subsequently bought by
Soapworks

Any ideas about how an American can get a bowl of Sartorial and a bowl of BB and be sure that it's the newest formulation?

David,

Thanks for the information. Sad to see such fluctuations in the offering of products under the company name that was at one time such a respected name for quality.

How disappointing! I sure hope they get the EF formula up to snuff quickly.

Thanks for the info!

David,

Thanks for the Info! Of the Pen's soaps you've tried, can you tell us which is your favourite and why?

So is Soapworks the ones making the new soap or is it Creighton's?

I heard it was Creighton's on another forum.

Thanks!

Matt

For what I know , Creightons only supplies shaving creams to the London firms , but not the shaving soaps , which have been supplied by other brands.

Hi Matt,
I can't be 100% sure but I was under the impression that Creighton's only makes shaving creams and not soaps for the English companies.
As to which soap I prefer, I would eliminate the English Fern for the reason I have given in the opening post. To be truthful, it comes down to scent preference really. It's funny how opinions change. I tried both the BB and EF a couple of years ago when the lather was pathetic, and at that time I loved the EF scent and hated the BB. Now, even when the EF does eventually comes under the same new formulation, I would place the EF in third place. The choice between BB and the new Sartorial is a difficult one, Two completely different scents, I love them both, and I will always want both.
