So I picked up a Bakelite Slant from the Italian Barber and I find that I really like it. Yes, it is made of plastic. Yes, the blade exposure is uneven. But it works great for me.

So now I am wondering what wonderous efficient but smooth razors I may be missing out on. So what suggestions would you offer to someone looking for an aggressive (and hopefully smooth) razor?

For reference I have two mild vintage Gillette (i.e. solid safety bar, an Edwin Jagger DE89, and the Bakelite.

At this point I am not ready/willing to take on the responsibility of a straight razor.

iKon slant would be my first suggestion if you like the Bakelite slant ...

my overall favorite in terms of efficiency and smoothness is the Cobra Classic ... Biggrin

I agree with the iKon slant. With a side-to-side comparison, they have very close to the same geometry. They also have the domed head as opposed to Merkur's "terraced" head.

I would suggest the Weber Polished Head if you have the EJ89 and you want a slightly more aggressive razor as it is all-stainless steel at a great price.
The Ikon Slant and Cobra are worthy candidates also, but a bit more expensive.
Good luck.

Apart from a second slant - the Merkur 39C serves me well and is quite a bit more affordable than the iKon - I would suggest the Merkur 45C as a natural companion to the Bakelite Slant.

Definitely the ikon slant. It's very smooth and efficient.

Or maybe another slant that doesn't exist in the market yetSmile

Sounds like the IKON Slant is a hit.

Any suggestions on an open comb razor? Perhaps the 2013 Muhle R41?

Are their any issues with current Cobra that is being shipped or is it just as good as it ever was?

Actually, after my experiences with the iKon slant, I would not recommend it to anyone. In my opinion, it is a mediocre shaver and a very expensive one at that.

However, everyone has their own preferences. It works for some people - it may work for you.

My suggestion would be to get a modified Merkur slant from Elite Razors.

Good luck with your choice.

For an open comb razor, I'll default to suggesting perhaps the best razor Gillette ever made - the long com NEW.
