Poll: Which razor should I add to my arsenal?

I am debating between a Merkur 15C and 1904/06. I know the 1904 is three piece with a head similar to the Gillette Old. What I don't know is whether the 15C is two piece or not. That is to say, does the handle stay attached to the base plate while the lower knob unscrews to release the top cap. Also, I'm just assuming the heads are the same. If someone has anything to add to my considerations, by all means...

Please cast a vote for either the 15C or the 1904, even if you only own one of them.

While I own neither, I am in the market for a open comb razor myself... from what I can tell by googling, the 15C is a three piece razor.

Hope that helps you Smile

The 1904-6 and 15C are both 3 piece. Both shave fairly the same. The 1904 has a standard or OC head. This razor is coated with nickel. The 15C is a chrome razor slightly lighter then the 1904-6.

Buy both and then you could be the judge. You can always sell themWink

Have you thought of a Gillette NEW long tooth open comb? The Gillette NEW is an excellent razor. I much prefer it to the Merkur OC. They are three piece razors and not too expensive. Also they are widely available. In fact, they Gillette NEW type open combs are the only Gillettes that I prefer over their equivalent Merkur razors although many many people who shave with DE razors swear by Gillettes.

Eric makes a good point. Only I would go with the 'Old Type'. And if you're ready to spend a few more $, look at Bobs restorals (Bobs Razor Works). Otherwise I'd go with the 1904 only because I like the patina of nickel better than chrome. JMHO

I had a Merkur 15C open-comb razor and used it for quite a while. After acquiring two Gillette NEW open-comb razors, I set the Merkur 15C aside, and eventually gave it to my grandson. The Gillette NEW open-comb razors are superior to the Merkur 15C, as to fit, finish and the quality of the shave in MHO.

Just a thought. You may be able to get a Merkur Travel Razor off e-Bay in great shape that has the OC head. Put it on another handle and they work great as a standard razor. Plus you still have a small travel razor as well.

Heads are both the same.
The 15C is a three piece like the 1904. Of the two, i would go for the 1904; better design, a bit heavier, great overall look. However, if you want a bit of a more aggressive razor, the Gillette Old Types are better. You could do as GD Carrington suggests and buy an Old Type and get a custom handle for it! Good luck. The 1904 is a very nice razor and you will not regret buying it. Classy design!

Thanks for all the input. I had wanted to get one of these leather cases, and was perfectly happy to pay the $23 to get one at West Coast Shaving. Occasionally I shop with John for things that Phil doesn't carry, usually different brands of blades. Anyway, this weekend the code WCSCASE makes this case $5 with the purchase of a razor, so I figure it actually makes the 1904 cost $8.84. That's my logic, anyway.Biggrin

As stated, the heads are the same on these models but I prefer the 1904 for looks alone. One of the better retro looks in Merkur's lineup.

Hello Dirty Texan,

I own both razors you mention. I don't much care for the handle on the 15C, so I put the open comb shave head on an Edwin Jagger faux ivory octagonal — and it has turned into a delightful razor, and quite handsome.

The 15C handle went on a later model Gillette Tech, from the 1960s or 1970s, I believe, and I gave it to my daughter. She likes it.

The 1904 handle now sits under the Gillette Fat Handle Tech from the 1930s.

In other words, I like the 15C and 1904 open comb shave heads, which are similar from what I can tell, but I have little use for the handles on these razors.

Of course, you might like both razors they way they are. If it's a question of choice, however, I suggest going with the 1904 open comb.

I had a 1904 open comb and foolishly pif'd it a few months back. I will order another one soon. I loved the way it shaved and unlike some, I also liked the handle. Just a great little razor.

Old thread but maybe the right place.

I made a frankenrazor with the OC base plate of a a Merkur travel razor, similar but a bit older (hammered box outside, purple box lining with gold lettering) than the one in the picture of GDCarrington above.

QUESTION: Did I assume correctly from the suggestions in this thread that the base plates of all the Merkur OC's are identical including vintage travel razors and the 1904.

If that is the case no need to try a 15C or 1904 OC.

Thanks a lot for your help
