I own a 58 in Best. I like it more than somewhat. I selected it primarily for handle size and shape. I have big hands and bowl lather a lot. I love the 50 series handles.

If I were to be picky, I'd say I'd like it to be a little denser and a little more bulb-like than fan.

The specs of a Duke 3 knot are almost the same (except for individual variation). Are they essentially the same knot in different handles? Does anybody own both? I don't want to buy a Duke and be redundant.

I think what I really want is a Chubby 2 in a 59 handle...in jade...or amber...in Manchurian!

Mark, if you're listening......

I have thought, for a long time, it would be nice to get a Chubby 2 knot in a 58 handle. That would hit my sweet spot-if it were 2 band.
Dream on............

My experience is pretty much only with vintage versions of these brushes, but my Dukes have been significantly more densely packed than the 58, and thus somewhat firmer and scrubbier.

The same holds true for the current versions.

Fantastic handles, those 50 series. Wouldn't it be nice to see the 58 with a Chubby 2 knot!!! Hmmmmmmm! I would love to see a Chubby 2 Super in a similar handle style! That would be ideal. Biggrin

I like the 58 handle myself. It looks just a bit taller before the first ridge in the handle.

that bulbous 2 band above is a beauty Cool

I used to be a fan-man, now I'm gravitating towards Hybrid and Bulbous. Visually they look better to me and I like that they don't open up as much on the face.

Duke 3 vs 58... or Chubby 2... ?

The Duke 3 is one of my favourite brushes. The fifty series boast an elongated handle which is both suited to face and bowl, whereas IMO the Duke is less appropriate for bowl lathering. The Duke is denser than the Fifty series, but of course the Chubby is denser again. A 58 is closer to a Duke 3 than a Duke 3 is to a Chubby 2 in terms of density. The Chubby will feel the most luxurious and biggest by far, but won't have the same flow through as the Duke or Fifty series. All 3 represent wonderful choices, but my selection would be thus:

Bowl lathering as a priority... 58

Most luxurious and most presence on the face... CH2

Best value all rounder in terms of density, flow through etc... Duke 3

And finally after reading your preferences in the opening post... without doubt a 58 Manchurian with a Jade handle.

Time for you to email Mark! Biggrin

can someone put up a SIDE-BY-SIDE (in same pic) of the D3 and 58?

preferably in same hair (2 band or Best) for a comparison.

I know it's a specific request, but I'd love to see them together to get a sense of how similar or different they are.

German has a pic of both brushes in different pics, but it's hard to sense the sizes

Side by side comparison of 58 and Duke 3 in Super 2 Band:

Duke 3 25/48mm
58 24/48mm

Both knots are very similar in density as you can see from the view below. Both have very soft tips. Subjectively the 58 seems to have a bit more backbone and is a bit more "pointy" - that is why probably.

Both are fantastic brushes for face lathering with soaps and creams alike (I use mostly soaps).

WOW...thanks German. that was quick and exactly what I was looking for.

knots look similarly dense but as you said, the 58 appears a bit pointier.

much appreciated.

I think we're talking dream brush here.

I wonder if it might take a 59 handle to accommodate a Chubby 2 knot?

And why not in amber, or jade, or coral?

And leave it to Ben to play the Manchurian card thank you very much!

Well, we can dream...

It is wishful thinking ...
the Simpson 58 knot is 24mm, and the 59 is 25mm, whereas the CH2 knot is 28-29mm.
if one were to hypothetically extrapolate ... in order to get a CH2 size knot into a 50 series handle ... it would be a Simpson '62' or '63', perhaps with the nomenclature of being a 60 series handle! ... Biggrin
