Are you looking for a user or collector grade razor?

They realy are nice shavers.

Just shaver grade to try it out, after hearing so much about it. I have an ebay bid on one, but don't want to pay a lot for one. I'm also not sure what model or year is best. I hear the floating head is better. I don't know what type the ebay one is.

I really don't need another razor. I love my Webers and Futur. Just interested in all the hype and want to try a shave with one.

The floating head is super aggressive. Everyone's impression is different, but its WAY more aggressive than the R41 IMHO

I saw an old thread on TSD with photos of the non-floating head and the floating head and I swear I couldn't tell the differences by looking at the photos. After seeing Mantis cut himself with the Muhle R41, I swore I didn't want something that aggressive when I can get BBS with 2 passes with Webers or Futur or some SE razors. So if this is as agressive as the R41, I shouldn't try to buy one. Someone told me it was similar to New and Old open comb razors in being aggressive. I haven't found the Gillette News or Olds to be too aggressive.

Barbasol started out with the non-floating head design, which means the blade doesn't have a gap, it just lays down flat on the guard. A year or two later they redesigned it to incorporate the gap. It wasn't in production for very long. It's a substantial razor. I have the floating head Barbasol, and yes, it's more aggressive than some razors, but it's more comfortable than the R41 Toothcomb. Here are a few comparisons, from my shaving drawer. The Barbasol is rougly an equal to a Slim set on 7; a Merkur Progress set on 3, more aggressive than a Slant (Slants aren't very aggressive, at least to me, when you get the angle right.), but less harsh on the face than the R41.

I completely agree with you, Gary.

I also have a Barbasol floating head razor, and I find it to be aggressive without being harsh (like my 2011 R41 was). That's why I still have my Barbasol, but not the R41.

I think the difference is the floating head barbasol has a HUGE blade gap. But the blade is still slanted downwards. The R41 on the other hand, has a nearly flat blade angle, which just doesn't feel natural at all.

I lost the ebay auction on the Barbasol. I was at a dance and couldn't get back in time for the ending, so lost the bid by one dollar.

See if you didn't know how to dance you would have won. Keep looking sooner or later another one will pop up and you will snag it.

Thanks. I shouldn't keep adding to my overabundant collection of razors, but I am still interested. I lost one bid on another interesting razor that had the auction end in the middle of the work day. Why time them that way?

I almost stayed home from the dance to wait on the razor, but decided I needed to hear a terrific jazz swing band and dance for 3 hours instead. The band is local and called Mint Julep Jazz Band with jazz professors making up the horn section from a local college's jazz program and a wonderful young female singer who sounds like the old standards singers from the 1930's and 40's.

This another of my addictions.... dance, followed by playing music and singing.

I just won an ebay auction for a shaver grade Barbasol. It looks in decent shape but not beautiful, for sure, and a bit worn plate-wise.
