I love my Muhle r89 but I tried a merkur 34c HD for just one shave a few weeks back and I think I even liked it a tad more. It was a bit heavier, seemed to shave a bit nicer. Almost less of a scraping feel to the shave. I'm thinking about ordering a bulldog handled weber stainless after hearing so much about them but I'm wondering if it's a waste of money, since I already own the r89? The thing I'm noticing with the r89 is that even after 3 passes and touch ups i'm still not getting BBS all the time. It seems TOO mild for my hair, but it's such a nice shaver. I guess what I'm wondering is, does it shave a bit more effectively? It sounds like it's just as smooth of a shaver, based on threads. I was thinking about just going downtown and picking up an HD for about 60 bucks but I figure why not just order the weber and then I can use the handle on my muhle or gillette NEW heads (maybe). And get a better quality razor than the merkur. I think I'll be satisfied with the grippyness of the handle and the weight of it but I'm curious if it'll be more effective.

Oh, and does anyone know if it'll fit in the muhle razor stand (below)? I tried the merkur HD in it, and it did fit.

I have an EJ 89 to compare to, and for me I get better shaves with the Weber.
I don't know if the Weber will fit in the stand you have, but it looks like it would.

Weber wasn't a step up for me. A heavier handle is a nice upgrade to the R89. I would also try a shim or two before buying anything, will help you decide if a more aggressive razor is for you.

An R89 with a shim and a stainless handle is a very nice shaving machine!

I've had the EJ86, 34HD and now a Weber. The EJ was hand down the worst shave for me. I just could never get the angle right. The 34HD is as far as I'm concerned the best razor (for me). Great shaves, no nicks works with just about any blade. The Weber was similar to the 34HD, but I think I prefered the 34HD; mind you I've only had one shave with the Weber.

My family just asked what I wanted for xmas and I gave them a link to the weber, a 100 pack of polsilver si's and the mwf in a ceramic dish. Hopefully Santa brings it. Biggrin. It gets too much high praise to not try it out. I imagine I'll love it. I wonder if the handle will fit on my stand and also work with the Gillette NEW LC head?

IMHO, yes. I like the R89 quite a bit, but the Weber is a bit better (smoother and closer), but only a bit. In any event, you are curious, so get it. For the price it is well worth it.

The Weber's handle does fit the New LC head. It is a great combination and will likely become one of your faves.

Love my r89 and i DO want something a bit more affective but just as smooth with a nice grippy handle and heft so i think it's perfect. i gave it to the family as an xmas idea, if santa doesn't bring it i'll order it right after Xmas. Can't wait. Although now I'm curious to what that new Muhle razor is.

I started with an EJ89 and still love it. About 2 weeks ago I acquired the Weber (chose the bull dog handle but either one is fine). I am having a difficult time putting it down and using another razor. It is much more effective than the EJ89, perhaps slightly more aggressive in my view.

If you like the R89 you're likely going to love the Weber. If it is on your Christmas list make sure to specify whether you prefer the shorter bull dog or the longer classic handle.

Yes, Weber is a better choice.

I was mentoring a friend in how to straight razor shave and handed him a Weber to shave some troublesome areas instead of using the straight. He used it and said, "I don't feel it cutting." He touched his clean-shaven face and was amazed.

Does anyone else find the Weber a lot more aggressive than the 34HD? I used it the other day and while it gave me a great shave, my face felt like it was slapped by a hundred hands.

I like really mild razors so the last shave felt like it came out of left field for me.

* I found the Weber ARC and the PH to be more aggressive than the Merkur 34C. I don't know how to quantify it compared to your experience, but I would say twice as aggressive, for me.
Nothing compared to my DLC which is the smoothest shaver I have ever tried even though it is the exact same head as the ARC and PH, except with the coating. Blush

TWICE as aggressive as a 34d? since i'm sure most of has have or have had a slim, wouldn't that be like a 9 setting? I feel like my r89 is a about a 4-5 on my slim.

My Webers feel mild but efficient shavers to me.

This is my experience. A touch more agressive but significantly more efficient. Have not done a direct comparison, but from memory the EJ de89 equals a 1.5 setting on the Mergress, and Weber a 2.0.

With the 34HD, I can barely feel it doing anything but I know it's cutting the hair as my face is smooth and the sink is full of stubble. The Weber on the other hand, feels like like someone's taken a rusty cheese grater made of sandpaper to my face.

When I compare the side profiles of both razors with blades in them, the Weber's blade seems like it sticks out more than the 34HD - which seems to follow the flow of the head/base plate. The Weber's razor doesn't follow the razors profile and I'm positive that I had the razor assembled correctly.
