Hi everyone - I've been circling Thater brushes ever since I bought one from Celestino here. Its the 4425 and is listed as having a 24mm knot, but it appears smaller than that, and its a bulb shape, and I've been looking for a fan shape.

I've been reading that the listed knot sizes are not "true to size", i.e. that they measure the knot from the base of the knot itself rather than at the handle. But then I've also read that the listed knot size is 2mm less than the "actual" size, so it can go either way.

I've been looking at the 4125/2 (26mm) or 4125/3 (30mm). My favorite size is a 26mm knot, so I just wanted to make sure that 4125/2 would be true to size. I am also interested in the fan shape of it. Thanks for all your input! Josh

I've never seen anyone say that the Thater knots are *smaller* than the size listed. The actual size is usually *larger* than what is listed. My Thater 4125/1 confirms this.

If you are really worried about the size of the knot being "too big", just buy one in the size below.

I've stayed away from Thater due to cost and their extreme bulb shape. I prefer a fan shaped knot and while they may make some, I've yet to see one.

Thanks for the response; so are you saying that the size is a little larger than as listed? I might go with the 4125/2.

Royal Shave sells a few that are fan shaped.

Yes. I have a 4125/1. "Official" Specs say it's 24mm, but at the base where the knot meets the handle it is bigger. Sorry, I don't have digital calipers, so I can't give you an exact measurement.

A good rule of thumb is that the knot diameter specs are actually 1-2mm larger than what the "official" specs say. Sometimes the lofts are also a little bit shorter than the official specs as well.

Again, if you are really obsessed over a couple mm, just go one size smaller than what you'd normally get. Whatever Thater you choose, you'll have an excellent brush.

Thanks so much for the advice. I know I'm obsessing over a minor issue (isn't that what the internet is for?), but I just want to make sure I'm making the right choice. I'm always looking for the perfect brush, and I see the contradiction in that statement.

Here is a Thater fan:

26x55mm

I have the same dimensions in the bulb, but the fan feels much bigger on the face.
Both remind me of my Rooney Heritage XL brushes (with the "gel-like" tips)

I ended up getting a 4125/2 with a fan shape and it is awesome. Very soft and spreads nicely but also handles harder stuff (so far I've only used creams and soft soaps) just fine.

I had this same brush and ended up selling it to fund other purchases. That is one decision I really regret. It is a great brush.
