My stepfather is quite fascinated by the fact that I am a wet shaver. He has expressed interest in using a DE, but said he quit and threw his away because blades became harder to find.

My idea is to put together a kit for him and present it as a christmas present. He already uses a brush and a mug soap (in a vintage Old Spice Mug), I'm thinking it's Williams, but it could be VdH as well, but he doesn't get my obsession with brushes and razors anyway. In other words, the kit I'm putting together will include a DE, a sample of blades so he can experiment and find what works best for him, and soap sample. I've got some ABCBA on order from IB, so I figured a 4oz cut in a nice container would be nice for him to try.

Problem is, I'm hung up on which razor would best suit him. He wears a beard (it appears to be a pretty course beard to me), never seen him with out it, so the razor would be for cleaning up and keeping his neck clean. My options are an EJ DE86B that I don't use because it's a little too aggressive for me, a 1949 Super Speed that I've cleaned up and soaked in Barbicide, or a Merkur 34c that I've recently fallen back in love with but once I'm done with this blade it'll probably be a while before I get back to it; or I could go way out and give him one of my E2s with a full set of blades.

What do you guys think would be the best option for him. Keep in mind he's used one before so it shouldn't be too hard to relearn, and once he finds some blades he likes, I'll buy them in bulk and give them to him when I place an order; however I am gonna toss in some drugstore blades for him to try (I know, it's crazy).

If he gets into it, a nice Semogue will probably show up for Father's day, as he's a boar man, and has had his boar for decades. I'm choosing the ABCBA because it's a classic scent that he may recognize it once he uses it the first time.

Hi Clinton,

I don't know what your situation is but if you are planning on giving him a razor out of several that you know you won't be using anymore, why not gift him two, along with that sampler pack of blades and the soap, and let him really mix and match. He'll be like a kid in a toy store. Smile

Once he's hooked, don't forget to show him how to join The Shave Nook. Winky

Clinton, any of the three razors you mentioned should be fine for him, but I think the SuperSpeed might be the easiest to for him to use as it is a TTO and is a vintage! I think he may like it for it ease of use!
With regards to the blades, Astras SP are a good choice as opposed to the drugstore ones!
Great thing you are doing for him and good luck! Biggrin

That's great you're reintroducing him back into DE shaving. I'd go with the super speed. It's easy to clean and load. Great job!

I'm thinking the '49 Super Speed would be good too. He might have even owned one, or his father might have at some point so it could give him a connection that I don't know about. I'm also gonna follow Freddy's advice and give him an E2 with a full set of blades. He probably knows what an injector is too and might have even used one. This gives him two totally different spectrums and levels of aggressiveness. If he enjoys the Super Speed, but not the shave he gets from it, I'll give him the Edwin Jagger.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. Gonna start putting together this kit together for him. Hopefully he'll like it. He might even develop a SAD or RAD...LOL...

For blades I'm figuring some Silver Blues, a couple of SIs, an unopened pack of Feathers, some Crystals (my favs), Astra SP, and I'm thinking I should go to Sally's Beauty Supply and get some Personna Lab Blues for him to try. This way he can ask my mom to pick some up for him if they work for him.

You guys think of any more blades I should throw in? I've got tons of blades, course I guess I could always just give him those whenever I see him.

For blades, the Personna Lab blades are winners. Another favorite for me is the Gillette 7 O' Clock Super Platinums (in the Dark Blue box).
