Another popular question among wet shavers is what blades are we all using and how many uses are we getting out of these blades ? The obvious steel wool beard vs. the baby soft beard doesn't play a factor here as it is just a general curiosity question, but feel free to include your hair type as well. This may actually help point people to a good blade to try out !

I haven't used one today yet but yesterday it was a vintage Gillette Super Blue, second use. I love them. Having been alive and part of the beard fashion of the late 70's..early 80's I can say my beard is average,density-wise, maybe on the heavy side of average, but a little softer than most I was told. Now in another razor I have a Personna 74 razor blade that's waiting on shave number 19 I believe. I have to check my notes on that but I'm still getting closer smoother more comfortable shaves with it than most other on their first use.

I use different blades in different razors. I am using a 1956 ball end tech today with an Astra Platinum and it gives a very good shave indeed. Astras are crap in my Merkur HD though. Weird. Different blades, different razors. Polsiver browns in my 1909 Old Type. Great shave. Polsiver browns in a fat handle tech? Meh. In a 2013 R41? Really good. Feathers in the R41?? Horrible. Feathers in a English Red Tip Superspeed (n.b. not a Rocket: a rare gem of a razor)? Brilliant. My overall favourite blade is the Gillette 7 O'Clock Blue Platinum. Can't figure if the new Gillette Platinums are the same thing. Have some on order. I hear they just nudge out the Silver Blues.

It was a Gillette 7 O'clock Sharp Edge or Yellow. First one, I expect another two out of it.

I spent my early months blade testing and keeping meticulous notes and it paid off, at least for this frugal yankee. (frugal doesn't mean cheap, it means getting the most bang for the buck) Longevity was just one of the characteristics I tested for, sharpness and smoothness were the other 2 high characteristics I looked at. If it doesn't perform and feel good it's not much good, right? OK, I wrote it was months, but it was also longer than a year. Toward the end I just wanted it to end.

I used a SuperMax SuperPlatinum for the 7th and last time today. All of my DE blades are good for 7+ shaves typically, or I don't have them in the cabinet and won't buy more. I always can them at 7 shaves since DE blades get pissy when they've done too much and I don't like to see my blood. That's DE blades. My SE blades are typically good for 14+ shaves. SE blades lose efficiency and don't draw blood as they age so it's OK to use them in an extended life to see when they are no longer useably efficient. I've gotten as many as 20+ shaves from a SE blade and getting an efficient BBS shave every time. When I need more passes or care for a BBS the blade is spent. I don't do that. If I did I could get more shaves per SE blade. I'll never test that. I'll grow a beard first.

Loaded in a Muhle 2013' R41 using a Treet platinum super stainless 3 passes a day for 4 days. Then the blade is almost worthless.

I've been using Personna Supers (the blue-packaged ones) because they give me a shave a notch below Feathers but without the Feather "bite." I usually switch them out after a calendar week, which is usually 6-7 shaves. But I've actually been using the same one for about 3 weeks now and felt no degradation in quality, so I'm going to keep rolling with it.

Gem Stainless PTFE single edge. Day #8. I get good shaves out of them for at least 14 days, but by day 21 they get pitched.

I used a Razi, one of 3 vintage blades I found last week. It happens that the Razi is a Belgium blade (I'm Belgian). Just got my fifth shave out of it and one more is certainly in there. Very nice surprise this blade, smooth & sharp.

Bought all remaining packs (found during a bike trip to France), I've kept one pack and send all the others packs to friends on the shaving forums so they can try these oldies out.

Second use of a Schick Plus Platinum. This is a very good vintage blade, for me about the same overall quality (although not the durability) of a Personna 74, but not quite as good as a Wilkinson Light Brigade or a Gillette 'Swede.'
