Mercury(II)thiocyanate on fire - a reaction that used to be known as Pharaoh's serpent. Sold as a firework until they noticed that both the compound and the 'snake' was rather poisonous. One would think that the mercury would have tipped them off...

There is several YouTube videos too, this is one of the best ones I found:

The one you might have played with is a "black snake", based on sodium bicarbonate. The ones based on mercury seems to have been outlawed ages ago - at least in Europe.

I'm certain I'd have played with the mercury ones. The 60s, in the US???? Yeah, safety wasn't something we cared about. That was before we had much Federal regulation of things.
