On this date in 1686, Daniel Dafoe's fictional character Robinson Crusoe left his island after 28 years, apparently never having shaved the whole time. Dafoe himself, although sporting a hairstyle few of us choose today -

- at least was clean shaved.

If anyone is interested in staying at the modern Robinson Crusoe Island Lodge, off the coast of Chile, they offer "free toiletries," but whether or not this include shaving equipment is not specified. Internet access is provided for a surcharge, so you can stay in touch with the Nook.

I grew up reading that book every summer. I really loved it! That, and Treasure Island, and even 'The Swiss Family Robinson'.

Strangely, my older daughter won't touch these books with a bargepole. Biggrin

Those were great books Yohann. Sadly, the art of reading a book is dropping quickly

Chris -

I've been lucky in that my daughter loves to read. It's just that she doesn't care for what I loved when I was her age. Some of this I put down to the differences between the reading styles of boys vs. girls. Some of it is just due to the times.

When she was really young, our tastes overlapped more, and we'd discuss books a lot. Now, she reads stuff that I haven't necessarily read, and she has little interest in the classics.

That could change over time, of course.
