This week my new Merkur 37 slant showed up, and I waited until today to take it on its maiden voyage. After the due diligence of proper razor blade loading, and general shaving techniques, I was ready to go.

MdC was chosen as the soap, and the blade was the PolSilver SI's. The soap is a natural choice for me, as it has always been a lather bomb (same as Da Fat). The SI blades were selected due for another reason. I have always found them a bit harsh for me, wether I have an OC, a TTO, or my Mergress in hand. Quite a few people have commented on a sharp blade choice for the Slant, so why not try the SI now?

Results? Very impressive. I keep rubbing my face, as if the fine shave couldn't be true. I love my razors, and though they all perform well in their selected role, the Slant is quite the instrument. No nicks, cuts, weepers at all. The most important task for me going in was to realize I would concentrate on my technique, and it paid off.

The Slant was used as any other razor in my quiver. Same pattern of WTG, ATG,XTG and I was done. Much like an OC the Slant needs careful attention under my schnoz. That was it, all done, and a good dose of Captain's Choice Lime Bay Rum later, I kissed my bride good morning!

Congratulations, Chris.

Great combination you had : 37C-Polsilver SI-MdC

Although I've sold off most of my DE razors, the 37C and 39C remain in my den ... and will always have a place there.

This is another razor I'd like to try. Does Merkur only have one slant bar head? I've read lots of good things about how there is a merkur slant that is very affective but now all that scary at all and then I just looked up merkur 37c on youtube and there is a video talking about how it's one of the most aggressive razors one can buy.

Don't believe the hype.

Merkur slants (37C 39C) that are currently available, share the same head.

IMO, they are medium-aggressive, and do require a little more vigilance, compared to a mild closed-comb razor such as the R89. They are not as aggressive as the likes of the R41 tooth-comb.

Definitely worth looking into, for those who want a fairly aggressive but smooth shave.

Thanks for the info. How do they compare to the ikon slant?

The Merkur slants and iKon slant are very similar overall, in terms of performance.

The Merkur is a far better value, but the iKon is beautifully crafted stainless steel.

They offer very similar shaving performance ... I found the iKon to be a tad smoother.

Bottom line : price is the biggest difference, but you get what you pay for if looking for solid construction, etc.

I'll have to give one a try. Maybe I'll try and make a for trade thread and see if anyone wants an r89 for a 37c. They're not very alike, but price difference isn't huge between them. Sorry to hijack the thread a bit.

Welcome to the world of slants, Chris, and great to hear all went well. I held off slants for ages under the misbelief they were very aggressive and required a different approach. Just treat like any other DE and they'll work brilliantly.

Thanks guys. The slant is an excellent choice for all shave nooks. If I had tried this a year ago, I do not believe I would've had the same results. The extra year of experience with DE shaving has really improved my respect for technique. Now my experience has expanded to OC's (I love 'em!) and now a slant. Dare i say the next frontier is...

The Cut Throat

And it really scares the bejesus outta me

My wife got me a 37c for Christmas and ice had a similar experience. Very efficient, but I can't really call it aggressive. Loving it.

I just got the iKon slant w/ my Christmas money, and have used it thrice.

I think I'm going to try the "sharper blade" option next time and see how that works for me, too. I have been using Voshkods, which I find to be plenty sharp, and smooth, but not as sharp as the Polsilvers or Astra SP.

While I don't usually get along with OCs, I do love Slants, they give me a close and smooth shave. I enjoy my 39C, but my absolute favourite is the Merkel. Biggrin
