As I was trawling the web today, I came across "The Racially Fraught History of the American Beard" - an interesting story of the 19th century facial hair in the US. Well worth a read in my opinion.

the town was Fitchburg, Massachusetts.
next town over, called Leominster, where I grew up, is the location of the grave/monument.
