Team Shave Nook,

I have been blessed by the wife to order a Simpson Duke 3 in either Manchurian or Two Band --- Mark says he can make it up and have to me in around 21-30 days.

Which would you go for and why?

Thanks,

Jason

I'd get the Manchurian first since wife approved the funds. That way you can also get the two-band later and tell her it's a less expensive brush in all honesty.

Not sure if that was exactly the type of advice Jason was looking for, but nonetheless it is a very valid and logical argument... and since you'll probably end up owning at least one of each, I'm with guildx500, go for the Manchurian first! Biggrin

Tough choice...both equally hard to obtain. Manchurian a little more expensive...I would lean that direction for that reason, while it's "approved". But I would also take into account what qualities you are most looking for. One of these two may serve your "needs" = wants better.

I have both, and personally I enjoy my two bands, but this is classic YMMV thing. I really like the ultra softness of the Simpson two bands while still having a decent backbone. For me, I have found they truly are in a class by themselves.

I know plenty of gents prefer the Manchurian, and for good reason, so it's really a matter of what qualities you favor in your dream brush.

Good luck in your very tough decision.... You just can't go wrong either way!

As an owner of several examples of both, and not knowing your general preferences, I suggest if you prefer to use creams go two band, if you prefer soaps, go manchurian. The manchurian has more backbone and firmer tips giving it an edge loading soaps. It is also a better brush, in my opinion, for face lathering. On the other hand, if you are seeking pure luxury, the two band can not be beat.

If you can swing it, I suggest order both. You are already going to the trouble of working through Mark, and the significant other need not see both at once. Right? It is a sure way to test if your wife really pays attention to your shave gear.

I am a face latherer, so your advice is the type I was really hoping to get --- BUT you sir are an enabler of enablers...... just get both .... yeah right, my wife knows all, sees all, LOL.

I actually may get both.

Thanks,

Jason

Trust me Jason, all wives know all and see all. If I rearrange something in the bathroom she wants to know what I bought. If she ever looks under my sink I'm in big trouble.

If you have not tried either, get both. Either of them will sell with minimum loss on BST.

I have never tried the 2 Band, Jason, but I have 3 Manchurians, face lather with soaps, and would never be without.

A complete reversal from my original love of 3 Band, Celestino.

Manchurian is a no regret.
Perfect knot, great for soaps.

The two band is excellent too.
I find it to shine in the CH2 I just bought.

But the MB is just right, so if you had to chose make it this one?,

Both are wonderful brushes and both are sure to delight.

My preference is Manchurian. I had a number of 2 band and sold them all to finance more Manchurians. For me the Manchurian possesses many of the characteristics I desire and in the right amounts. For me its my Goldilocks brush - its just right!

Ample backbone, soft tips and excellent flow through.

Perfect for face lathering. The knots are shorter lofted and easy to control. There is not a huge bloom (and less than 2 band). The knots retain their integrity and remain relatively compact. The hybrid construction provides a slightly larger face feel over coming their limited splay.

Knot construction is less concentrated or focused than the more bulbous 2 band. The 2 band will likely feel softer at the tips, but all post Jubilee Manchurians have soft tips. The Manchurian offers resistance against the face due to the individually strong hairs. This provides a gentle, but definite massage of the face.

There is no wrong choice here, but I would definitely recommend a Manchurian Duke 3, it is probably my favourite brush. If I was to recommend a 2 band it would be the Chubby 2, not the Duke 3. I believe the 2 band lends itself or is better suited to a larger denser knot, where the Duke 3 knot specifications and Manchurian are IMO perfectly matched.

But as with everything YMMV.

Ok, that explains a lot for ME. My only Simpson Manchurian experience is the Jubilee...so I may have to target another post-Jubilee Manchurian to carry a definitive opinion.

I know this isn't my thread, but thanks for weighing in Ben. I know you're a fan of Simpson Manchurians so I was anxious to hear what you had to say Biggrin

Wow --- so now what do I make of talk on some forums that Simpson changed their Manchurian hair around August of last year.

Is the modern iteration of a manchurian hair still good? Did it change?

Can I go bulb shape on a D3 Manchurian? Or should I go hybrid?

What if I go D3 Manchurian and Chubby Two band? Smile

Mark said he could max the knot for me on my D3 at 25mm... Any thoughts or fears on having him do that?

Thanks guys!

These will be my final brush purchases of the year --- so trying to do it right!

Jason
