For some time I have been enjoying the work of Rob Carey on various forums and how he turns some beautiful brush handles out of exotic woods. We would chat a bit through his threads about designs, woods, and staining methods. I took note of how he was progressing over time and really liked his work.

When I was a guest on a series of podcasts late last year, a question was asked about who people should look for in the custom handle and brush arena. One person's work I mentioned was Rob's. It was my view that his work was as good as those coming from Rod Neep, Bob Quinn and other brush makers that I felt were making serious contributions to this functioning art form.

A couple of weeks after the issuance of the podcasts, Rob contacted me and was surprised that I have placed him up with the other brush makers, but I stated that I felt that his work was more than worthy to be in this strata of makers. He thanked me for the fact that I had placed a great value on his work and I thought that it would end there and his handles would get the due they deserved.

Rob had something else in mind and he surprised me with an email stating that he was really appreciative of my comments so he was sending me a little something. Soon I found out that it was a Granadillo wood brush with a pin inspired by the Game of Thrones at the base. Although I do not watch the series, I am familiar with a Celtic Knot and this one sits in well on this brush.

I want to thank Rob for the surprise gift and I am still thinking about what knot to place in it. More than likely a Custom Two Band Badger but that will come sometime next week. Details on the handle are provided with the image below.

Again Rob, thanks it is a beautiful gift.

Gary, I would easily concur with your statements that Rob is one of the most talented brush-makers I have had the pleasure to deal with. Personally, I would have to say he is the most talented one, so far and that is saying quite a bit since many of the others are very talented, as well.
He made me one handle in Olivewood and one in Snakewood that you can see in my SOTD pics and I have yet to see their equal, especially, in the Snakewood with its intricate patterns. Heart

Beautiful handle, my friend!

Beautiful handle, my friend!

Wow! I hope you guys don't mind if I just go stand in the corner and blush!

Two of the most prolific and certifiable brush connoisseurs I've crossed paths with on the Internet saying all these nice things about me. You guys are going to give me a complex! LOL!

Truly flattered by the kinds words from both of you. And Celestino - I have to say, your awesome photography certainly helps any brush look amazing. I'm happy to be featured in your amazing work!

O.K. I'm going to leave now and go explain to my wife that she doesn't appreciate me enough and I am going to use this thread as proof! Anyone think that will end well for me? Smile

The Michelangelo of Brush Making ...

Mark, that is a good analogy and very fitting.

I've been looking at that handle for 2 days now and I can't find words better than BigMark used to describe it. It's pretty fantastic. I'm still wondering how it was done. An indexing head? But how?

No, I'm not looking for secrets. I prefer to just ponder it.

Well, here is a good visual of the 'Michaelangelo' of brushes' work of possibly his masterpiece, The Sisten Chapel. Biggrin
By the way, Rob, I only use a camera to point and shoot, but you do the most important work, my friend!
Also, I am not so sure if I would say I am a brush connoisseur as I just love beautiful and unique brush handles! Blush
I hope Gary doesn't mind me complimenting his thread.
