Hello, I'm Gene.
I would like to start off by saying I really love this site. I read it everyday so thank all you posters for that.
I have a question. I am still pretty new to using a DE but have been using a brush and soap for a long time though thanks to you guys I use better soaps, creams, and brushes. I have a few razors I mess with. My wife and I are always on the look out for vintage razors. We found a gilette black beauty adjustible 1974 at a flea market for 5 bucks. When I got it home and put a blade in it I noticed that the blade exposure was uneven across and one side had more of a gap then the other. I read online to use a screw driver and bend the bars. I did that and it seems to be better but not perfect. My questions are. is this a good razor? Was the price good? Is the uneven exposure an issue and if so how would you go about fixing it? And are you aware of this being a known issue. I hope that wasn't to much lol if so I am sorry. Thanks again for all the awesome info on here. And thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

Welcome to The Shave Nook, Gene!

I have limited knowledge of vintage razors, but perhaps one of the other more learned members will chime in soon, in terms of addressing your questions.

Welcome to The Shave Nook, Gene, and enjoy your stay. Smile

I have a 1970 Gillette Adjustable (Black Beauty) and really like it. I much prefer it to my Fat Boy, which seems to get the lion's share of the Gillette Adjustable attention.

It might be helpful if you could put up some photographs of the razor that shows the problem. Even if the razor cannot be repaired, for $5.00 it was certainly worth a shot. Good luck with it.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. I should have taken some pictures of what it was like before I worked on it. I got it a lot better but it's still a bit off. I will take a pic and hope it shows the issue alright. Thanks guys

Thank you all for the welcomes and advice. I just had my first shave with it and it seemed pretty good. I went with the number three setting. I'm not baby smooth like I would like to be but, I'm new to the saftey razor and want to wait before going against the grain like I do with my pro glide. I'm pretty sure if I didn't bend the bars with the screwdriver the shave would of sucked. I should had taken before and after pictures to show you. I might still look into somebody else working on it for me but all and all it did a fine job. Or like you Sid just finding another one. Thanks

As Freddy has indicated, you got a great deal on the Black Beauty from what it seems. Enjoy the razor.

Ok guys here are after pictures of my black beauty. After I used the screwdriver to bend the bars. It looks a lot better. Could use more work but I'm scared to over do it. I wish I had before pics but I did get any. I got one of both sides set on 1 and the same set on 2.

Well, everybody I did a WTG then ATG shave tonight with my black beauty set on 3. I must say that was the best shave I ever had. I use a little home made pre shave oil I made, a gillette silver blue blade I got in my sample pack, and some C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream with Eucalyptus Oil that my wife picked up at bath and body works for me. Then I topped it off with some dove shave balm and a splash of Stetson aftershave (country boy with a Stetson dad. I couldn't hide form it forever lol)
I am very happy with my smooth as a baby's butt face right now.[Image: image_zps995cc773.jpg]
I only hope all my shaves are as good as this one. Even my wife is loving it. Thank you all for your advice. It looks like I must of got the razor pretty str8 after all.

I should of made this a review or another thread at least lol.
