I have a rotation of 7 brushes but I'm going to be letting go of one, a Simpson's Emperor 2 in 2-band Super. Nothing wrong with this one, but I find the knot to be a bit to small.

I much prefer my Duke 3 in Best and Shavemac 177 and am looking for something a bit smaller than the Duke 3 and a bit larger than the Shavemac 173 in Badger...any thing I should consider?

Sounds like you are ready for a Chubby 2

Without fully knowing your style preference and how you'll be using it (face or bowl lathering) I'll give it a shot...

Smaller than a D3...How about D2? Biggrin

Or Thater 4125/0 or 1 in either 2 or 3 band.

Or WSP Monarch.

Thanks gentlemen!

I actually exclusively am a bowl latherer. I have yet to own a Thater and was considering one.

On the other hand I was also thinking about a Simpson's Commodore X2 or X3...

The Thaters are indeed phenomenal brushes, with outstanding quality and performance. I'm also quite fond of the octagonal handles myself as I find them extremely comfortable.

When looking at Simpson's, other options to consider with those bigger handles include the Polo, Persian Jars, and 50 series. I don't have any experience with the Commodores Blush...

And of course the one that's on my list to own...the Tulip Biggrin

Another one I forgot to mention before...Rooney Style 3. I have a 3/1 and it's a specularly good all around brush, excelling for both face and bowl lathering.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I had the commodore x2- which is an excellent brush, but I think it's more suited for face lathering. The handle on colonel x2l is more suited to bowl lathering than face lathering, IMO, and is a relatively inexpensive option.

For bowl lathering and a bit smaller than the Duke 3, I would suggest:

Simpson 57
Simpson Colonel
Rooney Style 3 (any size)
Rooney 2/1
Kent BK4 or BK8

I'm between the Commodore X3, Simpson 57, and BK8...

Oh...I may also go for a Thater...

Well, as long as you have narrowed your choices down to 4, you may finally decide on one................ or two, or three, or even four! Biggrin

Ha! I've got to sell a brush to fund this acquisition and will likely grab something used on the forums...

I've had a BK4 but it was to floppy for my taste but the BK8 has often been described as the perfect brush for bowl lathering...I hope that's right!
