I'm considering a new Simpson's brush, but can't decide between a Classic 2 in best or a Duke 3 in best. I currently have a Chubby 1 in best, which I find much too dense for my liking, so I think I'll sell it and replace it with one of the two I've mentioned, but which one? I've read that the Classic 2 is dense although not as dense as the Chubby 1. I've read, also, that the Duke 3 splays a lot when face lathering, which I may or may not like. I have a Duke 2 in pure, which I like, but find somewhat small. So, which will be more to my liking, the Duke 3 or the Classic 2?

Duke 3 Best has my vote.

The D3 IMO has the best combination of knot size and density. The knot size is larger and less dense than the CH1 and CL2.

Best will feel less rigid than Pure and will splay more, but it will also feel softer at the tips. A higher concentration of hair will aid backbone (as in the CL2), but a D3 is NOT what I'd term as floppy.

I owned a D2 and found it too small. The D3 seems just right (for me) and I own a few (in Manchurian)...

I own the CL1 (also in Manchurian) and I find it much smaller than the D3 and there is very little size difference between the CL1 and CL2.

Rover, CH1, D3, Jubilee and CL1 size comparison...

The only Best I currently own is the P8, but the above pics will still provide a visual comparison of knot characteristics.

I have had a Duke 3 in my den for over 7 years. It is a shaving brush plain and simple. Simpsons themseves tout it as one of their iconic ones. You can easily dispose of it. Ive owned over 40 Simpson Plisson Kent etc the only remaining badgers are the Duke and a Rooney 1/2

I agree with Ben on this. A Chubby 1 is going to give you the same kind of density in the smaller knot as your CH2. The Classics feel as dense as the Chubby (I have a CL1 and CH2, both in Best). The Duke 3 is going to give you a very different knot feel than the others.

Ben, minimalist and Bob, thanks for your insights and because of them I'm leaning towards the Duke 3 in best. BTW, how does the Duke 3 compare with the P8 Phyl? Ben, you must have the most amazing and extensive brush collection around; you never cease to surprise me with the breadth and depth of your collection.

I would have to agree with the others and say the Duke 3 would be the one to get. Good luck. Smile

Ben is that Rover in Manchurian? The hair looks noticeably different.

Ben or anyone, would you comment on the similarities and differences of the Duke 3 best and the P 8 Phyl.

Bryan, I don't currently own a D3 Best, but I have in the past.

The P8 has a bigger feel on the face compared to the D3 Manchurian, which has a more concentrated knot due to the different hair grade.

However, comparing Best with Best the D3 is bigger than the P8, see below...

D3 Best Specifications:
Knot Diameter... 25mm
Loft Height... 51mm
Handle Diameter... 37mm
Overall Height... 98mm
Weight... 65g

P8 Specifications:
Knot Diameter: 24mm
Loft Height: 48mm
Handle Height: 43mm
Overall Height... 91mm

Thank you Ben. Although the diameter of the D 3 knot is greater than that of the P 8, does the D3's higher loft make it less dense feeling? I have a P8 and wouldn't want to trade my CH 1 for a D 3 if it's very similar to the P 8

Bryan-To my face, the D3 Best feels very similar to the P8 Best (having just finished my first shave with the P8).

It is IMO very, very similar...

The majority of P8 owners have reported higher than the originally stated loft of 48mm.

In fact if you measure the P8 you will find it's almost identical in size to the Duke 3 the loft is around 50mm or even 51mm and the knot is near enough 25mm.

Just measured my P 8 with calipers and the knot measures 25 mm X 51 mm. The consensus seems to be that the P 8 and D 3 are very similar. Because of this there seems to be no point in trading in my CH 1 in best for a D 3 (or CL 2) in best. Although I don't use the CH 1 much because of its density, I do use it at least once a month. Moreover, it is an iconic brush, which has meaning for me as I'm into brushes. Thanks for all your help gents. I think I'll save my pennies for an M 7 2-band in faux ivory.
