I'm fortunate enough to own two NEWs done by the late Robert "Cooncatbob" Smith of Bob's Razor Works fame.

The first, on the right, is a standard NEW with the Bull Mastiff handle that I bought used from B&B. The second, on the left, was a custom job I asked Bob to make - I had procured a New Deluxe with awful plating, and asked him to redo it with the Bull Mastiff XL deluxe handle.

Of course the handles are interchangeable!

Of course the best of them is the New Deluxe - an uncommon razor to begin with, but amazing with a heavy handle.

I don't use them anymore since I fell in love with my Aristocrat Jr. over a year ago, but they are amazing collector's items, and I'm glad I own two.

I was fortunate to have purchased at least a dozen custom handles from Bob....and I enjoy each and every one....3 mind you I just traded to Gary(zeppelinkarte).so he also could enjoy his artistry...Bob would be happy to know we still treasure and share his work.

A dozen! I'm sure Bob appreciated it. He was nothing but a gentlemen when I communicated with him, and I should have pulled the trigger on a few custom jobs when I had the chance.

He was a technician with an artistic eye and a character in a way that's hard to explain. His style at least on forum thread was very straight no chaser. I sorely miss his sometimes cantankerous ways. This is just my two cents .. No one will ever replace him.i loved the xl deluxe handle I owned and in 08 I got one of his progress adjustment knobs for my son who still has it.

Bob was a great artist, he will be greatly missed. I was lucky enough to get 4 of his razors. Each are still in my current rotation.

I love the work of Robert Smith, and to be honest i miss him.

These are the handles he made for me

From left to right, Hoffritz slant head, merkur closed comb from a 1904N, New Improved, Brit. New (this one was sent to Bob to be replated) and a Ikon OC (polished version).

I have sold a BullMastiff Deluxe to Oversaturn, sometimes i miss that handle but i know he takes good care of it.Tongue

I bought a few handles from him, sold some duplicates, gave one to my son and still have a couple. Bob was a master craftsman if there ever was one. He was working on a new design shortly before his passing and I had hoped to get one of those but I don't know that he ever got any made.

I once had a handle made by BRW but unfortunately sold it. His work was outstanding.

I really wish I had procured one of these handles while the opportunity was there. I must've gone to his site a hundred or more times, browsing but never quite pushing the button.

I'm particularly fond of the razor handle on the right in the OP; that "bell" style on the end of the handle is a less common variant of his work.

The fact that Bob passed before I could get one of his handles was the main reason I jumped on a custom UFO handle when they became available. I've just made contact with them again and hope to have another custom UFO handle at some point in the future.

For me it is bittersweet to read this thread. I really enjoyed his contributions to the forums, but I'm sad that I never got one of those beautiful handles.

Yeah, those aren't too common. I'm pretty sure it was inspired by the 1916 "Aristocrat", which not only had the bell but the ring above it:

I've never found a 1916 in the wild, so the XL will have to do, and it does it quite nicely! The New Deluxe is probably the best head Gillette ever made, I wish I owned more than 2...

I love the News. Those are real beauties. I wish someone was around who could do such nice work. The UFO guys are, for all intents and purposes, unreachable.

The best handles around, a true pioneer, here are the four I purchased later (admired for too long and never purchased direct), they have different heads attached.
