I've done pretty much what you're suggesting - put lapping film on the hone side of the Rolls Razor. It does work.

What I did was use dense cardboard for the spacer. I also had several grits of lapping film, so I could do a honing progression.

At the end of the day, I found that this was more trouble than it was worth, and I just honed my Rolls Blades on my regular hones. I did strop them in the stropping mechanism.

On my old Rolls blades I used 1500 grit paper and they came out shining, but the engraving stays intact. But I'm only cleaning up lightly spotted blades.

Nice technique with the molasses.

I'm following this. I'd really like to get my Rolls shave ready, and I have no clue how to hone a blade or what's even required.
