On this date in 1915, baseball Hall of Fame catcher Wilbert Robinson attempted to catch a baseball dropped from an airplane 525 feet overhead. Ruth Law, the aviator, supposedly forgot to bring a baseball and instead dropped a grapefruit (although it is suspected that outfielder Casey Stengel persuaded her to make the switch), which splattered all over Robinson. He thought he had lost an eye because of the acid and the bloodlike splatter that covered him, but he quickly realized it was a joke when he saw his teammates laughing. From that point on Robinson referred to airplanes as fruit flies.

Gotta love Casey Stengel, my 2 favorite Stengel quotes:
"Can't anybody here play this game?"
"Don't cut my throat, I may want to do that later myself."
