I recently got into badger brushes after abandoning them for boars for a couple of years. I currently have two badgers:
1. An M&F Blond 24x48 and
2. A Shavemac D01 2 Band 24x48.

It's incredible how much larger the Shavemac feels on my face being that it is a fan and it is so dense. I love it, it is just slightly to big for my face lathering self.

So, I'm trying to put together a custom Shavemac. I'm really just bouncing back and forth on the knot and the size. I know I want a fan.

I'm torn between the Finest and the D01 3 band. I'd like something a little gentler than the 2 band and while the finest seems like a great value, I do love the density of the D01.

I'm also torn on the knot size. 20, 21 or 22? Do I just do a 1 to 2 ratio diameter to height?

Sorry, but I needed to talk this through. Ha! Huh

I have limited knowledge of Shavemacs hair grades, as I only own one brush w/DO1 3-B...I Do have some solid input on what size fan would make a great face lathering brush though...If 24 in fan feels a bit big on your face for your taste, I'd drop a DO1 3-B knot down to a 21mm and up the height to a little greater than 1:2...Say 21mm @ 44mm height, w/ the super dense and soft DO1 3-B fan IMO is a great recipe for a smaller sized face latherin machine!

The D01 3 Band is one of my favorite hair grades! Just the right balance of softness, scrub, density, and backbone. Personally, I'd probably go for something along the lines of 22X48 or so Biggrin

Try a silvertip bulb knot with a shorter loft. Below is a 24/48 in a RV boxelderburl Tulip style handle. The shorter loft adds backbone while keeping those silky soft tips.

That is a gorgeous brush! Tempted to have Rudy take care of it now.

Still prefer a smaller knot I think.

So I'm pretty set on a 21mm knot but can't decide on the loft. 42mm or 44mm? I usually go with a 1 to 2 ratio but 42 just seems too short.
