All this talk about the Gillette Slim razor has piqued my interest. From memory, I believe my father used a Slim as his daily razor back in the day - it must have been from the 60s. I have tried a couple vintage razors in the past (Old Type and a red tip) and each was ok but I did not like them and don't use them on a regular basis. Nowadays I exclusively using an iKon OC. Knowing I prefer a "modern" OC over closed comb razors, would you guys still recommend I try a Slim? I like the fact that it is adjustable of course, but I have tried an adjustable CC razor (Progress) in the past and although ok, I did not like it nearly as much as my OCs. The bar on the closed comb razors seem to result in some irritation for me? With this experience, I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to try a Slim.

Thanks, Jeff

I had 2 slims , a user grade and a gold plated (aristocract) bought on a whim.

Once i shaved with it i found it unremarkable.

The user grade was sold and the other given to close friend.

Had one of my best shaves today with my Slim and a Rapira Swede blade. Down to two razors, the Slim and my Ikon Slant, and quite content.

Easy razor to flip if you don't like it.

Didge, for comparison purposes what other razors do you like - do you like any OCs?

Jeff, I've owned a number of OCs - my Gillette Senator and the Ikon Open Comb are two that come to mind. The Slim gives me as good a shave (or better) will less irritation, more enjoyment.

Everything just works for me with the Slim - weight, handle length, head geometry, etc. The secret to the Slim though is you really need to tighten down the blade, that last bit of torque makes the shave special imho.

It's interesting that an Ikon OC is your weapon of choice, and that the progress left you less than satisfied.

I've gone into loving my Ikon and Merkur slants, they deliver consistent amazing shaves.

Maybe try a new long comb? They're much smoother than my New Deluxe (same as Ikon OC), easy to find, and just a tad less aggressive.

The slim is a very different beast than a progress and red tip though, not to be overlooked.

Ironically, I received my Gillette New Long Comb and Gillette New Short Comb in the mail today...
Cleaned them up, sanitized them, and polished them. I can't wait to take em for a spin...

The Slim is still my go to razor even if I use others, I come back to it when I need a break from testing or aggressive razors.

I believe all well heeled collections could enjoy the addition of a slim adjustable. There's a lot going for them on many levels: historically, functionally, appearance, heft and feel... At least while they still can be had for a reasonable price.

My slim is the razor I use to take a break... I can depend on a calm skin after a shave with the slim adjustable. The solid bar is perfect for not slicing the occasional raised blemish.

You should certainly try a Slim at some point. They're really good razors that will suit a lot of people (not everyone, of course).

I prefer them to the Fatboy.

Jeff-Add one. It's a solid performer. Like Gary, I use it to take a break from the new or aggressive razors (with my 47 Aristocrat). The past 9 days I've been breaking in and evaluating the RazoRock Slant, and today my razor of choice was...

Slim
