So, I've always been a face latherer at heart.
Tried out lathering a couple of times in a cup/bowl and realized it wasn't too bad and enjoyed having one more way to enjoy my shaving prep.

Heard all these great stories about 'warm lather' and how luxurious it was and having never seen or held a scuttle in my life I decided to go for it when I came across Robert Becker's site and the opportunity to get myself a scuttle in a mid-size (which is what I really wanted) for about 32 dollars. Hand made to order.

I opted for the #005 with a more slanted interior with ridges on the inside - in all black.

It took about three weeks from order-to-delivery and delivery came in a package earlier this week...

Opening up the box reveled a very securely packaged scuttle

With some assistance from my newly acquired Opinel knife I quickly unwrapped the black beauty

And a beauty it was...absolutely flawless.
Deep, deep black with nice internal ridges and a rim around the top of the bowl that I felt would help to keep the lather inside.
Woohooo... "new things!".

Plunked my SOC boar into it to get a sense for how well sized it was...and to me...it was perfect!

Using it later on I was surprised of how much water the scuttle could hold. That's great as that amount of water will help keeping it nice and warm.

So I fillet it with warm water - both inside the scuttle as well well as in the bowl - and put my brush in it to soak while I showered.

Came back out, poured out the water inside it and refilled it with 'warm not scorching hot' water and lathered up some Cella.

Wow - this thing makes lathering a piece of cake. Not sure if it was the warmth or the ridges in the scuttle but lather was practically exploding from it.

Oh and....it really IS a luxurious feeling to have a warm brush and lather when you apply for your next pass. I felt like such a gent ;-)

After splashing on some Tabac EdC after all my post-shaving I was ready to go out and face the world. Loved it.

Last time he opened up orders on the 17th of March for April orders so maybe around that date again for May orders? He said normally the orders for a month fills up in 4-5 days or so.

Don't think he has any 'email updates' so you have to go and check the site from time to time Smile

Robert does amazing work... here's a pic of mine. He will be sorely missed when he does end up really "retiring."

Looks like ill be a proud owner of the '005' like you have there. Blackened in color. I was opting for the #001 originally, but as per your post I really liked the lip the #005 offered. Robert is such a great guy, really easy to talk to aswell. Im proud to say that even with less than two full weeks after taking the DE dive..ill be a proud owner of one of his crafts.

Very nice scuttle-twin Smile Do post here in...three weeks or so...how you liked it.
And yes, that lip on the top of the scuttle works wonders.

For having been a face latherer must admit this scuttle has made me later in it every time since I got it.

The trick is to use 'really warm but not hot' water - that way your lather doesn't get hurt by it Smile

Here's a simple snap of it in color:

Also, his post from today is a bit worrisome for anyone who had planned on getting a scuttle by him but is still on the fence:

"I WILL TAKE AROUND 25 ORDERS STARTING ON APRIL 21. THOSE LAST ORDERS I WILL BE TAKING. I WILL BE GONE A LOT THIS SUMMER SO I AM NOT TAKING ORDERS. I MAY OR MAY NOT TAKE SOME IN THE FALL. /.../ I AM RETIRED AND DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS FULL TIME. THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT. "

May this be the end of the road for the Becker scuttles?

Cannot wait. Thanks for the Really warm water tip! My GF has told me that my shaving 'obession' that I have just picked up in the last two weeks (tons on order!,) reminds her of girls and makeup..haha!

As for Robert..it sounds like he is loving his hobbies a little too much, maybe? Sounds like the demand is more than he anticipated and really wants to enjoy retirement. I can imagine that taking 30+ a month can be overwhelming..especially when one would like to casually do 10-15 on their free time. Hmm..

Actually emailed Robert and asked what his plans were for this year and this is his reply:

"I will probably still make some but not as many and I will probably just be putting them on Ebay after summer. Going to take several trips during the summer so do not want a bunch of orders staring at me. thanks!"

So the sky isn't quite falling...yet Smile
